Writing tutor Eric Alan converses with keynote speaker Dr. Deborah Brandt, Professor of English Emerita at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a prominent writing researcher, and author of the award-winning Literacy in American Lives.

Presenting a panel entitled “Building For The Future: Veterans, International Students, and the Changing Student Landscape of the Writing Center,” Eastern writing center tutors Eric Alan, Lauren Biatowas, and Ken Clark attended the 2012 Northeast Writing Centers Association Conference at St. John’s University in Queens, New York. English professor Dr. Susan DeRosa served as panel chair.

Panel Abstract: Writing centers have noticed an influx of two groups of writers in recent years—international students and veterans. Working with these writers has proven to be challenging for tutors, as the discourse communities and sociocultural rhetorics of each group often differ from the university’s academic discourse and cultural communities. This panel will present findings from its primary research on the discursive practices of some international students and veteran students and then initiate dialogue with audience members about how writing center tutors and these writers might work together effectively.

Ken Clark, Lauren Biatowas, and Eric Alan were awarded the Robert J. Connors Memorial Scholarship for their work.
