Eastern Gets New Police Chief |

Jeff Garewski was sworn in on Sept. 15 by State’s Attorney Patricia Froehlich in the Connecticut Room. Following the swearing-in ceremony, Garewski called his new position at Eastern “a new chapter in my career.”
The new chief said he was never bored during his previous 22 years of service to the New Britain and West Hartford police forces, but indicated he was excited about the new challenge of being Eastern’s director of public safety andchief of police. “I am looking forward to working with the excellent staff we have at Eastern as well as all thelocal agencies. ‘How safe is the campus?’ is a question that students and their parents ask all the time. There is no doubt that public safety is a critical component of a successful college experience.”

New Coordinator of Women’s Programs

Lauren Davern, class of 2003, has been named coordinator of women’s programs at Eastern. Davern brings knowledge of
Eastern life and a commitment to women’s issues on campus. According to former director and professor emeritus AnnMarie Orza, “Lauren has the intellect, passion, and the ability to affect change.” Lauren is currently pursuing hermaster’s degree in secondary education at Eastern.

Acclaimed Filmmaker Spike Lee Comes to Eastern
|

Film director, producer, writer, and actor Spike Lee will speak at Eastern on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in Shafer Auditorium.
Lee’s movies include “Do the Right Thing,” nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 1989, “4 Little Girls,” nominated for the Best Feature Documentary Academy Award in 1997, and Malcolm X. Celebrated Beijing Opera Performs at Eastern

The National Academy of Chinese Theater Arts brings its world renowned Beijing Opera, a comprehensive performing artextravaganza, to Eastern. A series of performances, beginning at 3 p.m. on Sept. 21, take place in Shafer Auditoriumas part of Eastern’s University Hour series. The performance will continue on Sept. 29 and run through Oct. 2 atHarry Hope Theater. Tickets are $5 for Eastern students and children, $10 for faculty/staff and senior citizens, and$12 for the general public. For more information call the Department of Performing Arts.

Relay for Life - Another Opportunity to Make a Difference |
Eastern students, faculty and staff will again have the opportunity to raise money for cancer research in the EighthAnnual Windham Area Relay for Life on Oct. 15 and 16. The overnight event, designed to celebrate survivorship of cancer patients and raise money for research and programs for the American Cancer Society, begins on Saturday at 11a.m.
