In Fifth Grade and Attending Eastern! What a Life!

Justin Piro

More than 200 fifth graders from elementary schools in Hartford listen as Dakim Rucker, an eighth-grade student at Teachers’ Memorial Middle School in Norwich, explains why they should place a high value on getting a college education. The students were on campus as part of the “Fifth Graders Go to College” program, which saw more than 1,500 Hartford students visiting 11 college campuses in April.
The students got a pleasant surprise when Eastern President David Carter showed up, telling them that in order to achieve their goals and fulfill their dreams, they must pursue their studies from elementary school through college, work hard, and be committed to reaching their full potential.

Poncho provides the beat

Poncho Sanchez Performs

Internationally-acclaimed conguero Poncho Sanchez visited Eastern’s Shafer Auditorium with his eight-piece band on Thursday evening, April 7, treating a crowd of almost 300 people to more than two hours of Latin jazz. Sanchez’s superb conga playing drove the band down a wide rhythmic path, while the four-piece horn section cut the air with panache and precision. During many of the songs, Sanchez had the audience clapping, waving their hands, and grooving to the tight, Latin rhythms. The last two songs of the night saw dozens of people dancing in the aisles and on their seats!
The Grammy Award-winning musician and his band performed cuts from some of their earlier albums, including “Mambo De Cuco” off the Conga Blue album — “Latin Bit” and “Watermelon Man”; as well as “One Mint Julip” off Out of Sight, the group’s current CD.

Palooza a Rousing Success

Sumo Wrestling

Judging from the size of the crowd, the air of excitement and activity, and the smiling faces all around, the Second Annual Eastern Palooza, held Sunday, April 24 at Hurley Hall, was a great success. People were entertained by live bands and DJ beats; informed by booths staffed by WECS-AM, yearbook staff, and others; and challenged by such fun games as sumo wrestling and the human fly. Cotton candy, snow cones, and popcorn provided refreshment while mementos handed out for the day included frisbees and water bottles. A great time was had by all.
