Naomi Wolf Wraps up Women’s History Month at Eastern |
Eastern wrapped up its celebration of Women’s History Month on March 31 with an insightful and provocative lecture by feminist author Naomi Wolf. Wolf discussed “Sex, Alcohol, and the Death of Romance on College Campuses.”
Wolf challenged her audience of more than 100 students to move away from what has become the dominant male/female dynamic on college campuses — heavy drinking followed by casual sex, without any attempt to develop committed relationships. She made suggestions on different ways couples can get to know each other — “ever thought of taking a blanket and a food basket and going on a picnic?” — that can help create the romantic energy that sustains a long-term relationship.
Students in the audience asked thoughtful questions on the issue and in turn were honest in responding to Wolf’s queries concerning campus behaviors at Eastern. If nothing else, her presentation gave students something to think about as they mature and seek sustained relationships.

One of the highlights of the month was the 27th Annual “Day for Women on March 19. More than 200 attendees listened as Jane Roberts, well-known for starting “34 million friends of UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund),” asked the audience to help her raise $34 million — one dollar a person — to offset a decision by the federal government to withhold $34 million from the fund in 2002. Roberts said that every minute of every day, a woman dies of complications from childbirth. She asked the audience to join her campaign to do something about it.
