Charles Wynn: The Turkish Connection

Charles Wynn

Chemistry Professor Charles Wynn’s article, “Seen Any Red Pandas Lately?,” published in the Journal of College Science Teaching earlier this year, has been translated into Turkish by Seckin Erolglu, a biology student at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. The article was published in the popular science journal, Bilim ve Utopya (Science and Utopie). In addition, the first printing of the Turkish edition of Wynn’s book, “Quantum Leaps in the Wrong Direction: Where Real Science Ends and Pseudoscience Begins,” has sold out. A second printing is planned this year.

Teddy Bear Service

The Office of Community Service gathered more than 120 new stuffed toys in December for needy children in Willimantic. The toys were distributed at Three Kings Day celebrations. In addition to the teddy bear drive, Eastern generously participated in numerous service events this past fall, including a winter clothing collection donated to WAIM (Windham Area Interfaith Ministries); care packages for soldiers in Iraq; and Eastern’s Day of Giving, which served Thanksgiving meals to more than 400 area residents. Student leaders from PHP (People Helping People), a student group affiliated with the Office of Community Service, also recruited student volunteers who donated hours of service with local after-school programs, homeless shelters, senior centers, and local care centers. Bits of the Bard: A Rare Treat

Bits of the Bard On Dec. 7-9, nine student actors from the theatre class, “Great Roles: Period Styles of Actors,” delighted audiences in Eastern’s Harry Hope Theatre by performing multiple parts during their presentation of Bits of the Bard: Richard III Excerpted. Bits of the Bard is a production combining snippets from William Shakespeare’s play “Richard III.”

Richard III, one of Shakespeare’s most famous characters, was a man of multiple personalities, and the students, three actors at a time, male and female, performed his monologues to show the many sides of this charismatic figure. Professor Larry Hunt conceived Bits of the Bard, inspired by an Edwin Austin Abbey painting of Shakespeare’s Richard and Anne.
