Eastern Professor Named Willimantic Lions Club President |

Coordinator of General Chemistry and Assistant Chair of the Department of Physical Sciences Charles Wynn has been named president of the Willimantic Lions Club for 2007-2008. A ceremony was held on June 19 at Windham Community Memorial Hospital to install Wynn as an officer of the club. “I am looking forward to continuing the Willimantic Lion Club’s commitment to serving the community by promoting its service and fundraising projects,” said Wynn.

Eastern Wins Second Annual InternHero Award

Eastern received the second annual InternHero Award given by InternHere.com on May 18. The award, given annually by the website that offers internship assistance and opportunities to students, is presented to a student, a college/university, and an employer in the Connecticut/Western Massachusetts area. Nancy DeCrescenzo, associate director of career services, accepted the award on behalf of Eastern. “We are honored to be recognized as active participants in such a successful venture,” DeCrescenzo said. “Eastern is delighted with the success of the partnership with InternHere.com.”

Eastern Receives Grant for Summer Academy |
Eastern received a grant in the amount of $150,000 from the Connecticut Department of Higher Education to support the University’s Summer Academy for 21st Century Literacies, as well as provide content staff development. The grant money supported 30 middle school teachers from eight school districts, who attended a nine-day session on integrated science, social studies, liberal arts, and mathematics at Eastern from June 25 - July 6.

Eastern Hosts American Legion Boys State for 20th Year in a Row
|
Eastern hosted nearly 300 Connecticut high school juniors during the 66th American Legion Boys State, held from June 24-29. Participants set up mock town, city, county and state elections; engaged in role-playing; and debated and enacted legislation. The keynote address was delivered by former U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons. The students also heard Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal; Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz; and Superior Court Judge Susan Peck speak.

Eastern is hosting a sports camp for area children from July 23 to July 27. Participants, ages 7-16 years old, will play softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball and field hockey and will learn basic skills and rules; hone abilities; do drills; meet peers; and learn strategies for success. The coaches for the camp will be Eastern’s basketball coach Denise Bierly, softball coach Diana Pepin, and soccer coach Chris D’Ambrosio.

Campus Police Participate in Special Olympics Torch Run
|
On June 7, members of Eastern Connecticut State University’s Campus Police Department, along with members of the Willimantic Police Department, participated in the 26th annual Special Olympics Torch Run fundraiser. The run featured more than 3,500 Connecticut Special Olympics athletes and law enforcement personnel who carried the “Flame of Hope” over 640 miles in 100 Connecticut cities and towns. Nationally, the Law Enforcement Torch Run involves more than 85,000 law enforcement officers and is held in all 50 states and in 35 nations. The largest Special Olympics fundraiser in the state, the Torch Run raised $25.5 million last year, with $3,000 annually coming from the Eastern Campus Police Department.
