Housing Office Cleans Up!

On Aug. 28, 69 resident assistants, 14 hall directors, and the director, associate director, and assistant director of housing and residential life joined forces to volunteer four hours each of community service to the Town of Windham. They worked directly with Mark Paquette, director of parks and recreation, to clean the town’s two-mile bike path; inventoried and photographed every building on Main Street; painted the first selectman’s office; and cleaned and mulched the Julia de Burgos Park on Jackson Street. With a little bit of time left, some of the volunteers headed over to Eastern’s Arboretum, where they picked up 10 bags of trash.

Professor Muriel Miller, adjunct professor of art joined Ron Todd, professor of art at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU), and students from Eastern and CCSU on a field course in Ireland, Scotland, and England from May 22-June 19. Students earned academic credit while enjoying the scenic British Isles. The group visited Doolin on the west coast of Ireland, painting scenes from the limestone plateau known as “the Burren,” full of terraces, caves, wildflowers, and castles. They also spent four days visiting museums in Glasgow, Scotland. The majority of their time was spent in Grasmere, Cumbria, England in the historic Lake District. In addition to having an opportunity to paint and draw the pastoral charm of the local region, students and faculty took time to hike and enjoy the early summer in rural England.

Jamaican Teachers Work Sociology Degree

Jamaica student
Forty-five teachers from Jamaica spent six weeks in July and August taking courses that will count towards their bachelor’s degree in sociology. Students in the program are teaching professionals who are graduates of teachers colleges and/or universities sanctioned by the Jamaican Ministry of Education.

“I feel honored because I always wanted to get my degree,” said Frances Cooke, a native of Lucea, Jamaica. “There were many obstacles in Jamaica… so the opportunity to study part time through Eastern was a real treat for me.”

Correction

  • In this fall’s issue of Eastern Returns, the University’s back-to-school publication, on page 18, student Bruce Farver is building a robot in a class led by Professor Joel Rosiene, not Professor Gary Rommel. We regret the error.
