Web Notes: February 2018

As we continue to develop our new website, the project team wanted to share information about the Cascade Content Management System and Hannon Hill, the company from which we are licensing it.

Other Hannon Hill clients include Duke, Brandeis, Bowdoin, Wesleyan, Purdue, the University of Houston, Clemson University, Texas A&M, the University of San Diego and hundreds of other schools.

Development Features:

  • “COPE” (Create Once and Publish Everywhere”): elements such as infographics, testimonials, social media feeds, recurring lists, and directory information reside on the Cascade server and can be called up and featured on multiple pages, without having to cut-and-paste or otherwise manually embed them in a page. (For instance, an alumni testimonial will be stored in one place, but might appear on the Home Page, the Alumni & Friends page, and the appropriate academic department.)
  • Pages are treated as modular grids, where “rows” and “columns” can be used in multiple combinations to create different page elements, each with content ranging from videos to still images to lists, menus, and social media feeds.
  • Multiple templates allow Eastern to pick the template elements best suited to content, providing flexibility and consistency at the same time.

Editing Features:

  • Page elements can be managed/controlled so that department-level editors only have to worry about maintaining selected modules/page elements.
  • The WYSIWYG (“what you see is what you get”) editor allows you to see changes before you publish.
  • You can sunset content, so that events and other time-specific content will either disappear at the sunset date or prompt an email reminder to the editor.
  • Permission levels allow department heads to review/approve changes before they go live.
  • If you attempt to insert a link on a page, only to find the link is broken, don’t worry. Cascade won’t let you add a broken link, so you can fix it before the world tries to click on it and fails.

Website Management Features:

  • Analytics—data on who comes to our site, how long they stay, what pages they visit, and more.
  • Spectate—Hannon Hill’s free digital marketing platform is available to all Cascade licensees.
