Why Student Research?

Eastern Connecticut State University’s focus is “A Liberal Education Practically Applied.” As such Eastern Connecticut State is committed to supporting undergraduate research and creative activity across all majors. The Council on Undergraduate Research defines undergraduate research as “An inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline (http://www.cur.org/about_cur/fact_sheet/).” Undergraduate research has been shown to impact student retention, facilitate learning, develop mentor relationships with faculty, and support critical thinking, creative activity and problem solving.

Long-term, scholarly activity outside of the classroom has been tied to graduate school acceptance. Below is a list of students whose research was supported by the Office of Undergraduate Research and/or their respective departments and who have gone on to graduate training:

Kayla Tenore (COM) has been accepted in a JD program at Quinnipiac University.

Kayla Giordano (Political Science, Economics & Honors) has been accepted into the Masters program in Public Policy at the University of Connecticut with a full tuition waiver for the first year.

Sydney Batchelder (Psychology & Honors) has been accepted into the Behavior Analysis Ph.D. program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a tuition scholarship and a stipend.

Abby Caselli (Psychology & Honors) has been accepted into the Social Psychology Ph.D. program at Syracuse University with a yearly stipend.

Brittany Chabot (Psychology & Honors) has been accepted to NOVA Southeastern’s MS program in Family Therapy.

Kevin Connolly (Biology & Honors) will be attending Quinnipiac University in their Masters in Biomedical Sciences program.

Sabreena Croteau will be attending the University of Chicago’s MA program in Social Sciences: Political Science with tuition assistance.

Brett Gelino (Psychology) has been accepted to the University of Kansas in a Ph.D. program in Applied Behavioral Economics for Fall 2016.

Ian Peters (Economics & Honors) has been accepted into the University of Delaware’s doctoral program in Economics for Fall 2016.

Erin Drouin (Political Science & Honors) has been accepted in the University of Delaware’s Master’s program in Communication with a Concentration in Political Communications with full funding and a Stipend. 

Seth McCullock (Communication) has been accepted into the University of Connecticut’s Master’s program in Communication for Fall 2016 with a yearly stipend.

Alice DiFrancesco (Psychology, Biology, & Honors) has been accepted into the University of Connecticut Medical School for Fall 2016.

Ryan Blejewski (Psychology & Honors) is working on his Master’s degree in Behavior Analysis at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

Benjamin Abrahams (Biology) is a DMD candidate at University College of Dental Medicine.

Michael Freilich (Kinesiology & Physical Education) is working on his Master’s degree in Philanthropy and Development at Lagrange College.

Richard Magner (Mathematics & Honors) has been accepted into several Ph.D. program for Fall 2015. He will be attending Boston University with a 1- year fellowship. 

Robert Santiago (Psychology) has been accepted into a Ph.D. program in School Psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst for Fall 2015.

Jessica Patrizi (Biology & Honors) has been accepted into an medical school at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine for summer 2015.

Daniel Grondin (Environmental Earth Science) is completing a Master’s degree in Environmental Earth Science at New Mexico Highlands University.

Laura Markley (Environmental Earth Science & Honors) is completing a Master’s degree in Earth an Environmental Science Lehigh University as of 2015.

Renee Drouin (English & Honors) is completing a Master’s degree in English at Rutger’s University as of 2015.

Eric Cerino (Psychology) will be beginning a Ph.D. program in Fall 2014 at Oregon State University in LIFE* in an Aging Society program (*Linking Individuals, Families, and Environments). Eric was also given a grant toward his graduate training of $30,000.00 from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Connor Patros (Psychology) was accepted into a doctoral program in Clinical Psychology at Oklahoma State University.

Career preparation is also enhanced by undergraduate research and creative work. According to a study most employers surveyed noted the abilities to be innovative, critical thinking, broad liberal arts education to be highly desirable (http://www.aacu.org/leap/documents/2013_EmployerSurvey.pdf).

Eastern Connecticut State University provides funding for new projects, support for student travel for presentations/exhibitions, as well as awarding 2 summer research fellowships each year.  Details on these programs can be found on the menu under the “Resources” tab.

In the “Research Experiences” tab, students can find links to courses that result in a completed independent project or to secure research experiences as part of the Liberal Arts Work courses, departmental and university internships (Center for Community Engagement). There are also links to external research opportunities such as National Science Foundation (NSF ) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU’s) or Fulbright Research Programs.

Once your work is complete, you can find links to present/publish or exhibit your work either at one of Eastern’s research conferences or at the prestigious Posters on the Hill or National Council on Undergraduate Research conferences. Details and links to these opportunities can be found under the “Presenting Your Research” tab. Each discipline also sponsors conferences (regional and national) that allow for students poster and oral presentations.You should speak to your academic advisor about these opportunities.
