Research Guides

Are you beginning a research paper and need to find background information on a topic or subject, scholarly articles or citation information? These guides listed by department are intended to provide starting points for research in many subject areas. The reference staff is always ready to assist in the use of the library's resources. Ask a Librarian

Several ways that you can get help from our Reference Librarians include calling or visiting us, texting, using our Chat Reference, using an online e-mail form or search our research guides by subject.


Search our online catalog for books, DVDs, CDs and other library materials from the Connecticut State University Library System. A shared library catalog of Eastern, Central, Southern, and Western Connecticut State Universities, as well as the Connecticut State Library in Hartford. All of the materials from these libraries are fully searchable online and can be requested for pick up at any of the CSU library locations. Check CONSULS to be sure the material in not for library use only and that it is available.

Find articles to support your research with over 100 databases that contain articles from journals, magazines and newspapers fully searchable online, most with access to the full text. When off campus, you will need to authenticate with your ECSU computer username and password. (Usually your LastName, First Initial and your password) Call the IT Help Desk at 860-465-4346, if you have a question about your ECSU computer username and password.


I've found a good article from the ECSU databases but the full-text is not available. How do I obtain the full-text?

1) Did you check the "360 Link Check for full text" option, if available?

2) Use "Interlibrary Loan/ILLiad". You must register for this service by filling out an online form and we will try to find the full-text for you. (Please indicate if you are unable to come to Eastern if we have the journal/magazine/newspaper in print and available in the library) About Interlibrary Loan/ILLiad

3) Call the Reference Desk (see paragraph below).

If you need assistance using some of our databases, this is a good time to contact the Reference Desk, call our toll free number (1-877-587-8693) during regular hours and ask for the reference desk or call the reference desk directly (860-465-4699). Obtaining a Student ID Card

Your Student ID Card (Eastern Express Card) is also your library card. This card can be used at any CSU library to borrow library materials. Distance Education students can obtain an ID Card during Card Service hours of operation.

Students who are distance learners and are unable to come to Eastern may request a Non-Photo Eastern ID. The request must come via e-mail to Card Services distribution e-mail using the student's Eastern e-mail account. Card Services will verify registration status for the semester. The Card will be made and mailed to the current address in the Banner system. The ID will identify the student as an 'Online Student'.

(If taking classes at the Groton or Vernon sites, there are procedures in place to obtain photos and complete the processing of your card.)

If you are in need of your student ID number for any library services or resources when not on campus and you do not have an ID Card, your ID number can also be found on most of your ECSU correspondence as well as course schedules. Obtaining Books And Other Library Materials (Physical Items not accessible online)

I live near one of the Connecticut State University (CSU) libraries other than Eastern. How can I obtain library materials from the other CSU libraries?

As a student at Eastern, you can "Request" items you find in CONSULS using the same username and password as your email and Blackboard.

When requesting where you want to pick the item up, simply select the CSU nearest you.

How can I get library materials such as books or videos if I am too far from any CSU library?

If you need a book or video and you are not able to visit a CSU library due to distance, many local public libraries will offer interlibrary loan. Contact your local public library for details.

Also, many college and university libraries allow people from the community to borrow their library materials. Academic libraries other than your own usually do not offer interlibrary loan, an expensive service. Call a college or university near you to find out what they offer the public.
