Retreat
I.Pre-Retreat Approval:
In October, 1997, T. Fu proposed the schedule for the Third Library Retreat
to Dr. Battle. He approved of the Retreat and the support for staffing coverage
as well as food. Since the staff preferred to conduct the Retreat on campus,
there would not be a rental charge for facilities use. Soon afterwards in
a library professional meeting, T. Fu floated a draft agenda for the two-day
retreat. In a subsequent general library personnel meeting, a time frame
for both the Focus Groups Report submission and the Third Library Retreat
were agreed upon. Focus Group chairs were urged to make the reports as brief
as possible. The Retreat was to take place on January 8 and 9, 1998, in
the President's Dining Room in Hurley Hall.
II. Pre-Retreat Preparation:
During the fourth week of December, 1997, almost all eight Focus Groups
submitted reports. In mid-December, the following were disseminated in colorful
folders to Drs. Pachis and Battle and library personnel:
- A finalized agenda for the two days.
- Revise Initiatives and Goals from the Second
Library Retreat in 1997.
- An article in the November, 1997 issue of College
& Research Libraries by Alex Bloss and Don Lanier entitled, The Library
Department Head in the Context of Matrix Management and Re-engineering.
- Proposed Organizational Chart and Library Staffing
Plan Timeline.
- All Focus Group reports submitted in time for
inclusion.
