Outreach Services

The J. Eugene Smith Library services are designed to meet the information needs of Eastern Connecticut State University students, faculty, and staff.

"Bringing the library to you"

CONSULS

Available 24 hours a day by computer, the CONnecticut State University Library System is a shared online library catalog used by Central, Eastern, Southern and Western Connecticut State Universities and the Connecticut State Library.  You enter CONSULS from the library home page by clicking Online Catalog.

Doing Research

This link from the library’s home page will be found under Reference/Research.  It discusses the availability of information in databases, books, journals and on the web.

Research Guides

Found under Reference/Research on the library home page, these guides provide starting points for research in a broad range of subject areas.  May help students to identify a topic or determine a research strategy.

Subject areas found under Research Guides include:

· Citation Guides are used to give credit to your research sources.  They provide style guides covering print and electronic resources.
· Introduction to Research Databases is a step-by-step assistance tool giving examples of online screens you will see while using the CONSULS catalog and databases.  It also contains valuable catalog search tips.

· Plagiarism: A Guide for CSU Students and Faculty

Plagiarism and cheating are academic violations punishable by course failure/school expulsion.  Making students aware of this online guide will lead them to a recognition of plagiarism and provide methods to avoid it.

· Guide to the Research Process may be used as a first step in deciding upon research topics and strategies.  It highlights helpful print and online research resources.

Reference/Research Assistance

· Online assistance is available.  Just click on the On-line Reference link from the library’s main web site.  This will display a new screen containing the following contact options:

Live chat with an ECSU librarian. When this service is in operation (usually when the reference desk is staffed) your questions will be instantly answered by an ECSU librarian on site.

Live chat with an InfoAnytime librarian. This service is available 24/7. It is staffed by librarians who do not work at ECSU.

There is also an e-mail reference form if you prefer to send your questions by e-mail. You will receive a response within 48 hours.

· You may also call the reference desk (see telephone numbers at bottom of screen) during regular staffing hours of Monday-Thursday, 9 am-10 pm; Friday, 9 am-6 pm; Saturday, 9 am-6 pm; and Sunday 12 noon -10 pm.  These hours will vary during breaks, holidays, intersession and summer.  The operating hours may be verified on the library home page under “About the Library.”

Database Access

Our online databases offer access to many full-text journal, magazine, and newspaper articles. Arranged alphabetically or by subject, the online reference databases can be reached from the library's home page. Each Connecticut State University has its own package of licensed databases, electronic journals and other research services for use by their students, faculty and staff. All databases offer an "About" link to a summary screen containing a description of the database, the dates covered, search tips and whether or not it is full-text, along with other applicable information. You will need to enter your University ID number and a library PIN Code to use these databases from off-campus.

PIN Code

When accessing ECSU databases from off campus, you will be prompted to enter your eight-digit ECSU ID number and your PIN code. Use the PIN code link for assistance on how to establish one.

ECSU Journal Locator

A database listing the titles of journals, magazines, and newspapers in print and digital format available at Connecticut State Universities.  Where available, links are provided to full-text database sources and to the CONSULS record.  Use the journal locator to search for journals, magazines, or newspapers by title.

Inter-Library Loan (ILL)

Materials not available at Smith Library may be requested through the online ILL form.

Off-Site User Education

Library resource instruction is also available for off-site classes.  The Outreach Services Librarian will come to your location to conduct sessions focusing on general library research or specific course study.  In addition to classroom instruction, we will prepare and provide handouts and other printed/web-based materials about electronic databases, conducting research, and using additional resources.
