CSU Board of Trustee Minutes

This collection includes the recorded minutes of the Connecticut State University Board of Trustee Meetings from June 23, 1967 through August 30, 1989.

Lawrence M. Colvin Collection [Finding Aid]

In 1999, Lawrence M. Colvin donated his collection to the ECSU Archives. Lawrence M. Colvin entered Willimantic State College as a freshman in September 1960. He was a very active member of the class and had a deep loyalty to his alma mater. In the course of his four years at this institution he kept many items that were of personal interest. Following his graduation in 1964, he continued to maintain a high degree of interest in his school and his fellow classmates.

Eastern Connectcut State University (ECSU) Authors Collection

The collection contains books, bound items, video tapes, audio tapes and CDROMs published by ECSU faculty, staff and students. The ECSU Authors Collection follows the list of guidelines below. Journal articles and theses (not cataloged in CONSULS) by ECSU authors, are not included in the collection but are added to a searchable database accessible on the 4th floor of the library in the Archives & Special Collections.

Facilities Management and Planning Collection 1960-Present

The Facilities Management and Planning Collection contains material related to campus history and development. It includes information about proposed development plans, specific buildings and land acquisition, dating from the late 1960's to the present.

Larry LaFlamme Campus Photograph Collection   [Finding Aid] [Photographs]

This collection consists of photographs of buildings on the Eastern Connecticut State University Campus. All of the photographs were taken by Larry Laflamme.

Library Collection 1940-Present

The library collection contains material that documents the library buildings of Eastern Connecticut State University, over the years of 1940 to the present. The collection is organized within eight series; departments, publications, events, committees, newsclippings, photographs and buildings.

Dr. Helena Miller 1943-1945 [Finding Aid]

During World War II, Dr. Helena Miller, Dean of Women at the Willimantic State Teachers College, sent copies of a school publication entitled The Dean's Den to a number of students from the College who were serving their country. Many of the young people responded to Dr. Miller, to express their great appreciation for her efforts to keep them in touch with home as well as to keep her abreast of their wartime experiences. this correspondence covers an approximate 3-year period-1943 through 1945. While some of these students were graduates of the college, a number of them left prior to graduation with the intent that they would resume their education on their return from the war.

This box contains a collection of graduating class photographs from the Frederick R. Noble School. They date from 1934 to 1964.

Regional Study Tour Canada 1951 [Finding Aid]

Regional Study Tour Canada 1952 [Finding Aid]

The collection documents a regional Study Tour to Canada in 1952. The group was comprised of 2 faculty advisors (E. Juanita White, Associate Professor of Science and Donald Mattoon, Associate Professor/Principal of Laboratory School) and 22 students. The group made stops in New Hampshire, Vermont and Canada. In preparation for the tour, committees were established to research the various aspects of the trip and to make the necessary contacts and arrangements. A very detailed account of the preparations is included. There is also a daily diary of each day's events, along with some memorabilia.

Regional Study Tour Connecticut, Boston, New York/New Jersey 1953 [Finding Aid]

The collection documents a Regional Study Tour taken by a group of five WSTC students during 1953. William Forbes, an instructor at the college at that time, led the group. "Regional Study Tour" meant just that-the group toured facilities and areas that were fairly local as opposed to the groups that went to locations out of the country. This particular group, all members of the Class of 1955, visited locations in the Boston area, New York/New Jersey, western Massachusetts and Nantucket Island. They kept reasonably detailed accounts of their findings at each location.

Regional Study Tour Philadelphia 1953 [Finding Aid]

The collection documents a regional study tour-April 8-14, 1953-to Philadelphia, taken by 17 students. Dr. Nelson Palmer, faculty advisor to the group, and Ms.Esther Cohen, also a member of the faculty accompanied them on the trip. The places and institutions that they visited were varied--historical, educational and entertainment. There is some record of the planning involved and some reporting of their experiences while in Philadelphia.

Regional Study Tour Canada 1955 [Finding Aid]

The collection documents a regional Study Tour to Canada in 1955. The group was comprised of 31 students and two faculty advisors (Mertelle Larcomb, Assistant Instructor, and C. Francis Willey, Associate Professor of Social Science). In preparation for the trip, the group met and formed committees to research the various subjects that they intended to study while in Canada. On their return, they produced a very detailed account, arranged by chapter for each area studied. There was no memorabilia included.

Regional Study Tour Washington D.C. 1957 [Finding Aid]

The collection documents the report of the members of the class of 1958 who participated in a Regional Study Tour to Washington, D.C. in 1957. The group also included stops in Philadelphia, Gettysburg and the Amish country in Pennsylvania. They sampled the local cuisine, and studied the agriculture and customs of the Amish people. They also visited a number of the important historical areas. They spent several days in Washington, visiting with one of Connecticut's senators, checking out advances in education at the Maury School, visiting an embassy as well as visiting a number of Washington's points of interest. The material in this collection is in the same order as when it was presented to the library. The only change is the addition of photographs of the students and faculty to enhance the report.

School of Continuing Education 1946 - present [Finding Aid]

This Collection contains material related to the Office of Continuing Education. It includes documents from the administrative office, as well as information about events & programs. The collection for Continuing Education is divided into eight series.

Sukman - The Harry Sukman Masters of Music Collection [Finding Aid]

The Harry Sukman Masters of Music Collection contains sheet music Academy Award winning Sukman used during his career of developing and adapting music for film and television. The collection was gifted to the university by his daughter and is housed in the Archives on the 4th floor of the library. The collection is best used along side the books that Sukman / his daughter donated to the libraries circulating collection.

Teachers Education Records (1913-1989) [Finding Aid]

The collection traces the history of Eastern Connecticut state University's Student Teacher Program through a number of different documents, such as student teachers' lesson plans, records of student teachers, and program information.

University Events (1900-2000)

The University Events collection includes information on various campus-wide events. The type of information for these events varies from programs and invitations to the paperwork that keeps the running smoothly. The material in this collection ranges in years from 1900 through the present day.

Webpage Archive

This Webpage Archive includes all of Eastern's webpages from 1994 to the present. The site is a public non-profit that was founded to build an Internet Library, with the purpose of offering permanet acess for researchers, historians and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format. To search the collection for ECSU websites, simply type in the URL you are looking for and the Internet Archive will display the screen(s).

C. Francis Willey Collection [Finding Aid]

There are 63 folders of material in the Willey Collection. There are also 58 sound reels of material. Most of these sound reels are lecture related, but there are a few that might be of interest to the public, such as the 2 reels of ECSC history narrated by J. Eugene Smith. Paper files that might be of general interest include: the Connecticut Inter-Racial Commission, civil rights decisions, a sociological study of Willimantic, Connecticut, Commission on United Nations, bulletins from the Connecticut Humanities Council, and the Hampton Exchange Program (which includes correspondence from participating students). Of special interest to the ECSU community are files relating to 1960's unrest--ECSC reaction to the Birmingham struggle of 1963, the Kent State incident, and the war in Cambodia and Vietnam. There are also a few copies of the student-produced newsletter "Strike News", from the late 1960s when some Eastern students went on strike to protest the Kent State incident. The particular file also contains reaction from and opinion of various staff members on the events.
