Research Guide for Psychology

The following sources are frequently used by students and faculty. These resources provide authoritative information and starting points for research on many topics. This list is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather a first step. It may help identify a topic or determine a research strategy for approaching a topic. The reference staff is always pleased to assist in the use of any of the library's resources and services.

BOOKSUse Consuls, the Library’s Online Catalog, to find books, journal titles, microfilm, maps, and other resources in Smith Library and other CSU libraries.

JOURNAL ARTICLES:  Use databases to identify and locate individual journal articles, conference proceedings, and other periodical literature.

REFERENCE RESOURCES: PRINT AND ONLINE: Encyclopedias and other reference books are a good place to start a research project: They are designed to provide authoritative information; they can give you an overview of a new, unfamiliar topic; and they should provide a bibliography of sources to examine.

WEB RESOURCES IN PSYCHOLOGY:  Links to the Psychology Department’s website and other useful information.

JOURNAL ARTICLES

Research Databases for Psychology

These databases are usually the best ones to search for articles on psychology topics:

MEDLINE

MEDLINE is a database of article citations and abstracts (brief summaries) that is produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. MEDLINE contains records for journal articles in the fields of medicine, biological and physical sciences, dental medicine, nursing, veterinary medicine, allied and public health, and the health care system.  MEDLINE is a very large database with records for articles from over 4,800 biomedical journals. You can search MEDLINE by keyword or by subject.  Subject headings come from a specialized thesaurus called MeSH (for “Medical Subject Headings”).

PsycARTICLES

PsycARTICLES contains the full-text (in PDF format) of articles from forty-five journals published by the American Psychological Association (APA), along with eight journals from affiliated organizations (i.e, the APA Educational Publishing Foundation, the Canadian Psychological Association, and Hogrefe Publishing Group.)  The coverage runs from 1985 to present.

PsycINFO

PsycINFO is a very large database of citations and abstracts (not full-text) to journal articles, books, individual chapters of books, and scholarly dissertations in psychology and related behavioral and health sciences. Although PsycINFO itself does not provide articles, it does contain links to articles in some other databases, including PsycARTICLES.   PsycINFO offers both basic and advanced search screens that let you apply various search limits, keyword searching, and subject searching, using specialized headings from the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms

A special note about finding psychological tests in PsycINFOPsycINFO Help recommends that you start by searching to find the names of tests that have been used in research and written about in the literature. Test names appear in both the Abstract field and the Tests & Measures field. If the document includes the actual test in its entirety, it is marked as "Appended" in the Tests & Measures field.

Social Sciences Citation Index

The Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) is part of Thomson’s Web of Science. SSCI provides bibliographic coverage (with abstracts) of over 1,700 scholarly social sciences journals, as well as selected entries for articles from approximately 3,300 additional journals in the fields of science and technology. Although you can search the database by topic, SSCI is best known for providing a special type of searching known as “cited reference searching.” Cited reference searching lets you search for articles that refer to a specified author or work. A tutorial is available from a link near the bottom of the opening page.

NOTE:  The library’s general subject databases, such as Academic OneFile and Academic Search Premier, also contain articles on topics in psychology.  If you use these databases, make sure that you limit your searches to “peer reviewed” or “refereed” publications.

How to Find Out If the Library Owns a Journal

Search the ECSU Journal Locator to find journals that are available to Smith Library researchers, whether in print or online.  The Journal Locator provides links to both full-text journals in databases and online journals to which the library subscribes.  For online/electronic sources, follow the links to the right volume and issue.

CONSULS contains records for all the library’s print and microform journals and some online journals.  Use the Journal Title search type to look up a journal name in CONSULS.
