FREE LIBRARY PHOTOCOPYING FOR FACULTY
Eastern Connecticut State University
J. Eugene Smith Library
- In an effort to facilitate faculty research and teaching, the Library will allow current faculty members, or their authorized assistants, to make free copies on selected Library public-access, coin-operated photocopy machines.
- The Library provides free copying for non-circulating library materials, e.g., reference materials, journals, and archival materials, that faculty members need for their research. Free copying is not provided to make copies for distribution in classes, committee work, or other University groups. The University Copy Center provides general copying services in support of academic programs.
- The Library’s Circulation Desk, Curriculum Center Desk and University Archives will maintain a Log of Faculty Copying (hereafter called the “Log”), that will include the faculty member’s name, department, the number of the copy machine used, number of free copies made, and the date the copies were made.
- Faculty members will do their own free copying. Faculty members may authorize a limited number of their own student assistants to copy materials for them by delivering a signed memo to the Circulation Desk at J. Eugene Smith Library which names the authorized student assistants and the dates of authorization. These authorizing memos will be kept in the Log.
- Non-faculty ECSU employees do not need prior authorization to make free copies of non-circulating library materials, but they must specify a faculty member or university administrator for whom the copies are being made in the Log and present their valid ECSU ID card to check out the photocopy machine by-pass key.
- The Library Circulation Desk, Curriculum Center Desk, and Archives staff will check out a by-pass key that allows free copying on coin-operated, public photocopy machines for current faculty members, their authorized student assistants, or departmental support staff who are making copies for a faculty member or university administrator. The faculty member or assistant must record the copy machine number and starting and ending by-pass meter readings in the Log. Assistants will sign their own name and print the name of the faculty member for whom the copies were made.
- The Library Director, in consultation with the library faculty and with notification to the University Senate, reserves the right to re-evaluate free photocopying for faculty policy if the overall volume of free copying becomes a significant financial burden on the library, or in specific cases of abuse of the free photocopying policy.
