J. Eugene Smith Library Collections Gift Policy

The Library welcomes and encourages donations of materials that support the mission of the University.  Gifts of materials are accepted by the Library with the understanding that once they are received they are owned by the University.  The Library retains the right to determine their retention, cataloging treatment and other considerations related to their use and disposition.  Donors should contact the librarians named below concerning the acceptance and disposition of the donation.  Unless prior arrangements are made, un-selected and duplicate gifts will be disposed of in accordance with the Library’s surplus program.  The Library will acknowledge gifts that have been formally accepted, but the Library does not provide appraisals or estimates on the value of a donation.   Acceptance of major collections to the Library must have the approval of the Library Director and the University Administration.

The Library WILL accept:

• Books and other formats which fit in with selection criteria, supporting the curriculum;
• Scholarly items with research value that are in good physical condition;
• Serious literary works;
• Scholarly periodicals in complete and continuous runs of five years or more to fill in the gaps;
• Paperback books printed on acid free paper;
• Recent textbooks published within the past five years.

The Library WILL NOT accept

• Mass produced paperbacks (e.g. the "pocketbook" variety);
• Older textbooks (published 6 or more years ago);
• Books that have significant highlighting, underlining or margin notations;
• Moldy, mildewed, infested or damaged materials;
• Obsolete nonprint formats;
• Foreign language materials (except works that support the curriculum);
• Readers’ Digest, National Geographic
