Dance Resources @ Smith Library
The following sources provide authoritative information and starting points for research on the topic of dance. This list is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather a first step. The reference staff is always pleased to assist in the use of any of the library's resources and services.
LIBRARY CATALOG - This is where you can find books, journal & magazine titles (NOT individual articles), & media (DVDs, CDs, videos) in the library's collection by using the online catalog, CONSULS.
RESEARCH DATABASES - You can find articles, many full-text, by searching in our subscription research databases. In addition to articles, these databases include references to book reviews and essays that are included in anthologies. This is usually a better place to start academic research than a general web search engine, such as Google or Yahoo.
REFERENCE BOOKS - Encyclopedias and other reference books can be a good place to start a research project. They are designed to provide authoritative information and they can give you an overview of a new or unfamiliar topic. They should also provide a bibliography of sources for further research.
LISTENING/VIEWING RESOURCES - There are various media machines available on the 2nd floor of the library, past the Reserve Desk (cassette and CD players, video and DVD players). CD media (such as DVDs and audio CDs) can be played on any computer in the library; headphones can be checked out at the Circulation Desk.
WEBSITES OF INTEREST - There is a lot of interesting information on the web, but also a lot of misinformation which you do not want to use in an academic research project. Examine your web resources carefully - here are a few recommended sites to start with. Follow this link for help in evaluating websites.
