There are hundreds of professional organizations that evaluate children's literature and recognize its individual merit by presenting a particular author of a piece of literature with a special award of distinction. The American Library Association lists books that were awarded the Coretta Scott King Award. These awards are given to authors and illustrators of African-American decent for their work in promoting the message of peace and harmony. The Award pays tribute to Coretta King, the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Nutmeg Children’s Book Award
This award is given annually for a fiction title written for readers in grades 4-6. The Committee is made up of children’s librarians, school librarians, school library media specialists, and teachers. The Nutmeg Award is sponsored by the Connecticut State Library Association, (CLA) and the Connecticut Educational Media Association (CEMA).
