Canadian Studies Resources @ Smith Library
The following sources provide authoritative information and
starting points for research in Canadian Studies. This list is not intended to be comprehensive,
but rather a first step in the research process. The reference staff is always pleased to assist
in the use of any of the library’s resources and services.
CONSULS
– This is where you can find books, journal & magazine titles
(NOT individual articles), & media (DVDs, CD, videos) in the library’s
collection by using the online catalog, CONSULS.
PRINT
RESOURCES IN THE J. EUGENE SMITH LIBRARY - Encyclopedias, handbooks,
dictionaries and other reference sources can be good places to start a research
project. They are designed to provide authoritative information
and they can give you an overview of a new or unfamiliar topic.
They also generally provide a bibliography of sources for further research.
RESEARCH
DATABASES - You can find articles, many full-text, by searching in
our subscription research databases. In
addition to articles, these databases include references to book reviews and
essays that are included in anthologies. This
is normally a better place to start academic research than a general web search
engine, such as Google or Yahoo.
WEBSITES
OF INTEREST - There is a lot of helpful information on the Web, but
also a lot of misinformation which should not be used in an academic research
project. Examine your web resources carefully –
here are a few recommended sites to start with.
