Professional Associations

American Accounting Association (http://aaahq.org/index.cfm)  promotes worldwide excellence in accounting education, research and practice. Founded in 1916 as the American Association of University Instructors in Accounting, its present name was adopted in 1936. The Association is a voluntary organization of persons interested in accounting education and research.

 

The American Association of Economics (http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AEA/) was organized in 1885 in Saratoga , New York , by a small group interested in economics. From 1885 to about 1910, the membership of the Association consisted mainly of college and university teachers of economics. With the growing general interest in the subject of economics after the turn of the century, the Association attracted an increasing number of members from business and professional groups.  It was incorporated in 1923.  Today the membership is approximately 19,000. In addition, about 4,500 libraries, institutions, and firms subscribe to the quarterly publications of the Association.  Over 50% of the AEA membership is associated with academic institutions, 15% with business and industry, and the remainder largely with federal, state and local government or other not-for-profit organizations.  The purposes of the Association are to encourage economic research, especially the historical and statistical study of the actual conditions of industrial life and to issue publications on economic subjects.  The Association encourages perfect freedom of economic discussion, taking no partisan attitude, nor will it commit its members to any position on practical economic questions.  The spirit of these objectives has been maintained throughout the history of the Association.

 

American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (http://www.aicpa.org/ ) is the national, professional organization for all Certified Public Accountants. Its mission is to provide members with the resources, information, and leadership that enable them to provide valuable services in the highest professional manner to benefit the public as well as employers and clients.  In fulfilling its mission, the AICPA works with state CPA organizations and gives priority to those areas where public reliance on CPA skills is most significant.

The American Management Association (http://www.mra-net.org/) is a global not-for-profit, membership-based association that provides a full range of management development and educational services to individuals, companies and government agencies worldwide, including 486 of the Fortune 500 companies.  Since 1923, the business community has turned to AMA for the practical training and business tools needed to improve individual and organizational performance.  The AMA web site provides information on certification and continuing education, research, conferences and membership benefits.

The American Marketing Association (http://marketingpower.com), one of the largest professional associations for marketers, has 38,000 members worldwide in every area of marketing. For over six decades the AMA has been the leading source for information, knowledge sharing and development in the marketing profession.  The Marketing Power site includes job postings, best marketing practices, members only publications, conference information as well as access to some free demographic search tools and an online marketing statistics "textbook."

 

The Association of Government Accountants (http://www.agacgfm.org/about/default.aspx) is an educational organization dedicated to the enhancement of public financial management.  AGA has been addressing the issues and challenges facing government financial managers since 1950, developing accounting and auditing standards and in generating new concepts for the effective organization and administration of financial management functions. AGA conducts independent research and analysis of all aspects of government financial management. These studies have led AGA to be recognized as a leading advocate for improving the quality and effectiveness of government fiscal administration. CPAdirectory.com (http://www.cpadirectory.com/) is a nationwide database of 450,000 Certified Public Accountants and CPA firms searchable by criteria including name, location and industry focus. Taxpayer, small business, and investing information is available for the public and the professional as well as job posting and career information within the accounting profession and firms.  CPAdirectory.comT is accessible to everyone at no charge.

 

Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board (http://www.fasab.gov/) exists to promulgate federal accounting standards after considering the financial and budgetary information needs of citizens, congressional oversight groups, executive agencies, and the needs of other users of federal financial information. Accounting and financial reporting standards are essential for public accountability and for an efficient and effective functioning of our democratic system of government. Thus, federal accounting standards and financial reporting play a major role in fulfilling the government's duty to be publicly accountable and can be used to assess (1) the government's accountability and its efficiency and effectiveness, and (2) the economic, political, and social consequences of the allocation and various uses of federal resources. This website provides access to all publications issued by FASAB including exposure drafts, the volumes presenting original pronouncements and current text, newsletters, minutes and meeting agendas.

 

Financial Accounting Standards Board (http://www.fasb.org) has been the designated organization in the private sector for establishing standards of financial accounting and reporting since 1973.  Those standards govern the preparation of financial reports. They are officially recognized as authoritative by the Securities and Exchange Commission (Financial Reporting Release No. 1, Section 101 and reaffirmed in its April 2003 Policy Statement) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (Rule 203, Rules of Professional Conduct, as amended May 1973 and May 1979). Such standards are essential to the efficient functioning of the economy because investors, creditors, auditors and others rely on credible, transparent and comparable financial information.  The mission of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) is to establish and improve standards of financial accounting and reporting for the guidance and education of the public, including issuers, auditors and users of financial information.  The FASB develops broad accounting concepts as well as standards for financial reporting. It also provides guidance on implementation of standards.

 

Institute of Management Accountants (http://www.imanet.org/ima/index.asp) strives to provide a forum for management accounting and finance professionals to develop and advance their careers through certification, research and practice development, education, networking, and the advocacy of the highest ethical and professional practices.  The IMA site has useful links to certification and professional development programs, news, conferences and research.

 

The Marketing Research Association (http://www.mra-net.org/) promotes excellence in the opinion and marketing research industry by providing members with a variety of opportunities for advancing and expanding their marketing research and related business skills. Since 1954, MRA has expanded to include companies and professionals in all segments of marketing and opinion research, including data collectors, full service research companies, users of research and those who provide related services.  MRA is a source for assistance and training information where researchers learn of new opportunities, markets and potential obstacles to future success. The Association is also a forum where marketing researchers discuss common problems, share ideas, and combine their collective efforts to build industry information and reduce major problems and threats.  MRA has important partnerships with CMOR, ARF, and the Interactive Marketing Research Organization, as well as involvement with ESOMAR and other worldwide research organizations.

National Women Business Owners Corporation (http://www.wboc.org/) has established the NWBOC Network to provide critical information about corporate and government contracts and systems to women suppliers. NWBOC has streamlined locating information and technical assistance about corporate, and federal, state and local government contracting through one-stop electronic access. In an increasingly complex and competitive business world, the NWBOC Network offers women business owners a significant competitive advantage.

RAW (http://accounting.rutgers.edu/) or the Rutgers Accounting Web is an often-sited academic link with current information on the accounting profession, conferences, workshops and many current links of interest to accounting faculty and students.  The Accounting Research Directory (ARD) maintained on this site helps facilitate the research of accounting academics and practitioners by listing, evaluating, and categorizing the major articles published since 1963 from in nine leading accounting journals to Aid professors in the selection of articles to assign to students, help accounting practitioners identify relevant articles when preparing response to FASB discussion Memoranda and facilitate the selection of papers in a subject area.

University of Michigan Documents Center (http://www.lib.umich.edu/govdocs/) is a central reference and referral point for government information, whether local, state, federal, foreign or international. Its web pages are a reference and instructional tool for government, political science, statistical data, and news.  From the main page use the "statistics" link to access data sources lists on a variety of topics including business.
