The C.H.A.O.S. program is a 45 minute, once/week, 5-week program designed for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old children. The program takes place at ECSU. C.H.A.O.S. emphasizes the practicing of motor skills & movement concepts. Knowing that parents are a child's first & perhaps most influential teacher, this program uses parents as teachers. A parent or grandparent, who acts as the child's primary teacher, must accompany each preschool child. The program also utilizes university students usually majoring in physical education, early childhood education, or elementary education. The university students typically act as support assistants for parents, play partners for children, managers of the play environment, or guides and models for instruction.
The play environment at C.H.A.O.S. is a fun, safe, child-friendly one. Equipment utilized in this program is developmentally appropriate in size and in content in an effort to provide for the most appropriate practice opportunities. Portions of the program are dedicated to large group instruction & practice, song & musical movement, individualized station practice, & parachute play.
The program is in compliance with NASPE's Appropriate Practices in Movement Programs for Young Children Ages 3-5 (2000). Each of the sections of the document is listed below and the program has been carefully planned to meet or exceed NASPE's criteria for Appropriate Practice.
