Online Catalog and Web Search Tools

Online Catalog

Use the Online Catalog to locate books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials available in Pearson Library. Try a keyword search which allows you to search using any word; a subject search requires an exact subject heading from the Library of Congress Subject Headings books.

Pearson Library Catalog Tutorial

To locate periodicals held by Pearson Library and which years are available, check either the online catalog and search by title, or check the binder titled Periodical Lists by Title available in the library. Our periodicals are arranged in alphabetical order. Earlier volumes are either bound or are available in microfilm or microfiche format.

Web Search Tools

There is a wealth of information on the Internet. The following list of selected Internet resources provides access to web indexes and search engines. Links to these and others are also provided on Pearson Library's Internet Search Tools and Ready Reference Links page. One thing to remember about these indexes and search engines is that they all search the web in a different manner, so be sure to consult the "Help" or "Search Tips" feature found on the search tool's first page before beginning your search.

  • Yahoo: a hierarchical subject index for the www pages.
  • Altavista: a search engine which searches the web looking for sites that match your search terms.
  • Excite: a combination index and search engine.
  • Google: a search engine.
  • HotBot: a combination index and search engine.
  • Infoseek: searches all words in full text web pages, gopher, ftp sites, Usenet groups, and FAQs.
  • Lycos: a combination index and search engine.
  • The Argus Clearinghouse includes comprehensive bibliographies. Searchable and rated.
  • Metacrawler: a meta-search engine which searches several indexes and search engines at once and returns the top ten matches from each.
