Catalogue Course Description

Business Information Systems and Web Technologies Prerequisite: None This course provides an overview of Business Information Systems and related concepts in information technology. It includes transaction processing, enterprise resource planning, management information systems and electronic commerce. It describes the hardware, software, networks and telecommunications employed by these systems.

Prerequisites:

None though either BUS205 or CSC200 (for non business majors only) is expected to be taken at least concurrently with this course.

 

Course Educational Objectives

Upon completion of the course, you should be able to:

  1. Use computer technology to assist in decision making with a business environment.
  2. Use computer technology to formulate a strategic marketing plan.
  3. Explain the basic elements of the marketing concept and its implementations.
  4. Use a systems approach to assess market opportunity, select a target market and make decisions with regard to a marketing mix plan.
  5. List applications of marketing and benefits of marketing.
  6. Explain the characteristics of functional information systems.
  7. Understand e-commerce applications in business.
  8. Understand the benefits associated with ERP systems
  9. Explain the effect of information systems on international and ethical issues.

How are the course objectives measured?

Course educational objectives are measured by scores on examinations and quizzes, and evaluations of activities such as the integrative project, other course projects and homework assignments.

 

Methods and instructional materials employed:

The course objectives will be pursued through WEBCT discussions,  small group work on an IT problem solving project, work with the textbook (bring it to class please at every session as you will use it for the practical work), through homework, library and Internet search.

The assignments are due on the date noted on the weekly schedule. Late assignments will be assessed a late .5 penalty.

Plagiarism

Cheating and Plagiarism*
A student using other than approved materials when taking a test or who gives or receives information during an examination is guilty of cheating.

Plagiarism is presenting the work of others as one’s own. The “work of others” includes any work bought or borrowed from another student as well as work copied from a book, magazine, newspaper, or other medium.

Complicity in another’s act of plagiarism is itself an act of plagiarism.
These acts are considered academic violations and are covered by the Statement on Campus Rights and Responsibilities.
Discovery of cheating or plagiarism could lead to the maximum sanction of course failure and expulsion from school.

Research Team Group Project

Write a 5-7 paper about the future of wireless in business. Describe several innovative products currently under development by at least two manufacturers. (pg. 514)

Team Research Guidelines

 

1.      What is your topic? Describe it.

2.      How is your topic used in companies?

3.      What are the benefits?

4.      What are the problems encountered in achieving success?

5.      What are some examples of companies and how they are using the technology?

6.      Please contact two companies concerning your research paper.

 

7.      What are your thoughts of how you would use your selected technology?

8.      How would you go about setting up a project like yours in a company?

9.      What are the obstacles you might encounter?

10.  How would you solve them?

11.  What products are available? Who are the vendors? How much do they cost?

12.  What would it cost (your estimate) for a typical system to be installed in a company?

Please include the details for at least one team project.  Standards that should be included are:

 

  1. Complete a report using MSWord or Wordperfect, etc... ( up to the  discretion of the instructor)  which will  also include a  PPT presentation.    A soft-copy  will be submitted via WebCT.  A hardcopy is at the discretion of the instructor. 

2    Research component showing the ability to use library databases and other 

      resources. 

  1. The final report needs to have a title, one page abstract (Executive Summary), main body presenting the results on each of the three items above. At the end of the report list your references and sources of information. Use the Harvard Method of Notation for references, a copy of which in located on the course WebCT site.
  2. The project is to be conducted in small teams.

Please note that you can consult with your instructor on the first draft of your projects.

 

An excellent project should reflect the following requirements:

  1. It needs to show that the authors have investigated professionally the problem according to the guidelines provided in class.
  2. The report needs to be supported by references.
  3. The size will be dependant upon the topic.
