There are so many things that children and
teachers can learn through using Finale, Sibelius, and Sesame Street Music
Works. Teachers will find that they can teach
some of the musical concepts they already teach in their classroom more
effectively by integrating technology into their music lessons. Some children will be more motivated and
successful if they are using technology as a means to learn and create music.
The Music Zone at Sesame Street Music Works
offers young children many things to learn about. Some of the musical concepts they will learn
about and develop are: sound recognition, song recognition, patterns,
sequences, instrument identification, beat, rhythm, singing, listening,
analyzing, and directing. The students
make many choices throughout the centers that help them develop good problem
solving skills as well as beginning musical skills.
Finale and Sibelius allow children to learn more
about notating and composing music. They
will learn about time signatures, key signatures, rhythms, how many rhythms
they need in one measure. They will
learn about instrument ranges. They can also learn how to arrange music through
these notation programs. They will
become the composer, or the arranger of an already created piece of music. They will also learn how to analyze music,
recognizing the form of the music, but also will reflect on the expressive qualities
of the music. They will make decisions
and problem solve throughout this creative process. In the end, they may choose to learn how to
publish a piece of music or create a CD.
The other educational products that Sibelius has
created will help younger children learn basic musical concepts, some of which
that I have mentioned above. These
programs would be great to use during the early elementary years in preparation
for using the more advanced software.
These programs also expose children to other
careers in music besides teaching or performing. They learn what it is like to be a composer,
an arranger, a conductor (making musical decisions about the music, how it
should be played, etc.), and they even learn a little about sound recording. The uses of these programs are really and
truly unlimited!
