Rubric for 1/3, 2/3 and Final Essay Papers

In the 1/3 and 2/3 exams there are three questions and each question is worth 10 points. Points are awarded as follows:

4 points:- for knowing the material as described in the text, your notes and class handouts and meeting the minimum length requirement. In effect these points are awarded for effort. You will be awarded points if you have made the effort to know the material and write at length. You will lose points for a scant or meager treatment of the material to be covered

3 points:- for grammar, syntax and spelling. Grammar is a judgment of your sentence structure: is it in accord with the established rules? These rules cover such things as verb tense, possessive case and the use and positioning of prepositions. Syntax concerns the pattern and formation of phrases and sentences. In other words, is your answer readable and comprehensible?

3 points:- for organization and ideas. Organization: Have you covered all parts of the question? is your answer organized with an introduction, body of subject matter and conclusion? As for ideas, have you ‘thought outside the box;’ have you introduced original ideas to add to the strength of your treatment of the topic?
