Hello and welcome to Connecticut Landscapes on CD (and soon to be on-line)

This CD contains virtual field trips (VFTs) and supporting resources that examine the origins of a variety of landscapes in New England, Georgia and Greenland. At present these VFTs play best in Microsoft Internet Explorer using the Microsoft Media player plug-in within a maximized window. If your default browser is Netscape, or if you use Quicktime to view movie files you will have to wait a bit longer for the trips to load.

The purpose of this CD is threefold:

First, we demonstrate the varied and fascinating nature of earth surface landscapes at sites that are both exotic (Georgia and Greenland) and familiar (Connecticut).

Second, we introduce concepts, observations, and measurement techniques that are used by earth scientists to understand and explain the origin of several landforms.

Third, we indicate ways in which geologic processes and landscapes are important to people. In Connecticut, for example, mining of sand and gravel from glacial landforms supports a $102,000,000 industry.

In closing,we firmly believe that the best part of Earth science begins with observation of the real world. So please, use the virtual field trips on this CD as an excuse to get outside and examine the real thing.

Have a good virtual trip!
