| United Connecticut for Women in Science, Mathematics and Engineering |
| From August 1994 to August 1998, Dr. Carmen R. Cid was the Principal Investigator of a National Science Foundation Grant (HRD 94-50026) Project funded by the Directorate of Human Resources - Program for Women and Girls. A statewide coalition, entitled: "United Connecticut for Women in Science, Mathematics and Engineering (SME)" was established among Connecticut colleges/universities, school districts, professional organizations and businesses to improve access to, participation and achievement of Connecticut girls/women in SME.
The project's recruitment and retention strategies included:
- a clearing-house to obtain and disseminate statewide research on girls/women in SME
- various ongoing public awareness activities to focus attention on gender-equity issues in SME
- new programs/activities developed and implemented to enhance self-esteem and math/science learning for urban middle school/high school girls and community college women, and
- new gender-equity focused classroom teaching strategies to help current and future math/science K-12 teachers.
Thousands of educators, students and parents were directly affected by this project.
Alliances that continue United Connecticut's work include:
- a new, Connecticut chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS-CT) started by the project's principal investigator, and sponsoring gender-equity workshops and mentoring activities for girls and women in SME, and
- college/university-school district and community organization/business partnerships providing self-esteem and SME knowledge-enhancement programs for Connecticut's middle school/high school girls.
Project products include a CD-ROM disk, a variety of tip sheets for parents and teachers to use to encourage girls into math/science careers, computer software reviews and a Connecticut gender-equity resource guide.
