Habitat for Artists
In summer 2008, I participated in "Habitat for Artists," a site-specific, collaborative exhibition/residency project in Beacon, NY. Curator Simon Draper, who is interested in concepts regarding habitat and shelter in his own art practice, provided ten artists with 4ft. by 5ft. wood sheds, to be used as an artist’s habitat/workspace throughout the summer. Other participating artists included Dar Williams, Chris Albert, Matthew Kinney, Kathy Feighery, Marnie Hillsley, Sara Mussen, Lori Nozick and Roy Staab. Studies created at HFA will be on file at Pierogi 2000 in fall 2008.
The Tower Paintings: Keeping our Distance
This artists book documents a 34-panel series of paintings based on the structure of isolated observation towers that I completed in 2007. The paintings, made sequentially, unfold a visual narrative about process and progress. Because the paintings, some of which have been exhibited in New York and New England, have never been shown all together, the book format enables readers to see that an unedited series of paintings has both high and low points, good decisions and bad.
The Search for Moby Dicks
(Funded by a Connecticut State University Research Grant and an Artist Fellowship from the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism)
An ongoing, ever-growing digital installation project. Any students who would like to help on the project, please send a note via e-mail or stop by my office.
Two Coats of Paint
A blog about painting that I started in May 2007. The purpose is to gather reviews, commentary, and background information on painting and related subjects in one easily accessible site.
Writing
• Contributing Writer, The Brooklyn Rail. This monthly Brooklyn-based journal's mission is to "provide a forum for criticism of the arts, politics, and the world around us."
• Other recent articles have appeared in The American Prospect. Although founded in 1990 as "an authoritative magazine of liberal ideas, committed to a just society, an enriched democracy, and effective liberal politics" I mainly write about art-related issues.
• Contributor, Connecticut Art Scene
