Research  Interests

1) One of the most amazing tricks that cells do is to have their components autoassemble into more and more complex structures. One of the best examples of this is the eukaryotic flagellum. Approximately 300 different proteins come together to create this organelle. Flagella are easy to purify, since they are effectively outside the cell, and the alga Chlamydomonas has been a favorite for studying flagellar structure and function for some 40 years.

2) All organisms respond to environmental stress, such as heat shock, by producing a specific set of proteins, the heat shock proteins. For the last seven years students have been looking at the role of these proteins in the single-celled alga Chlamydomonas.
