Dear Friend of the Harry Hope Theatre,
We are pleased to announce our HHT Spring 2001 season of wild and wacky works of Theatre. We will start with Plaza Suite, a comic classic by one of America's most successful and prolific writers - Neil Simon. Then continuing with our Millenium Milestones of Theatre Series, we will present Classic Commedia, our version of what is considered the highlight of Renaissance Italian Theatre - Commedia del'Arte. Closing our season, we will offer Sophisticated Nuts and Dried Fruit, a new play by Hollywood playwright, Maggie Brown.
Tony Award-winning playwright Neil Simon is well-known for his Broadway hits to audience members of a certain age but brand-new to most of the younger generation. In fact, the student directors, Tyler Hewes and Michael Lessard, felt they had "discovered" this fabulously funny writer while on their quest to find a humorous play to open our spring season. What they discovered is a comic classic which runs the gamut from pathos to poignancy to flat-out farce. Plaza Suite will be presented February 9th-11th; Friday and Saturday evenings at 8pm; Sunday matinee at 2pm.
Classic Commedia directed by Larry Hunt, guest artist-in-residence, promises to be filled with physical humor, literally of the slapstick genre as well as filled with crazy characters near and dear to our hearts - the likes of those found in Plautus' Roman comedies, Moliere's farces, the Stooges' and Marx Brothers' movies as well as those zanies we love to laugh at in TV shows such as Saturday Night Live. Mr. Hunt will work with ECSU students throughout the semester to develop original scenarios through his Improvisation class. David Regan, guest artist-in-residence, joins the staff to teach students to design and build masks for the show. Sabrina Notarfrancisco will design and build the original commedia costumes. Lighting Designer Debra Siegel will add intensity to what will be a suitably silly setting designed by Bob Ritz. As a Senior Project, JoanneTerragna will act as Sound Designer adding the effects necessary to complement the loony antics onstage. Classic Commedia runs April 25th-29th; Wednesday through Saturday evenings at 8pm; Sunday matinee at 2pm. Tickets are $10 for Students and Senior Citizens; $12 for the General Public.
Sophisticated Nuts and Dried Fruit promises to close our season of delights with hilarity as student directors tackle the quirkiest of characters aboard an airplane bound for bellylaughs. It runs May 11th-13th; Friday and Saturday evenings at 8pm; Sunday matinee at 2pm. This show along with Plaza Suite is offered as part of of the HHT's Barebones Series which features modern and contemporary works in a scaled-down setting to complement the full-scale Millenium Milestones in Theatre Series. Tickets for Barebones Series shows are $5 for Students and Senior Citizens; $7 for the General Public.
