Alphabet Bench by Carlos Dorrien (2005) Child and Family Development Resource Center (in playground area)

With Alphabet Bench, Dorrien created a large, roughly hewn bench which retains the natural form of the granite.  The bench also resembles the play area with carved letters and books strewn across the surface in no apparent pattern.  Perhaps this serves to remind us of the casual or informal ways that children learn to communicate.  The sculpture has been adopted by the children as a place where they can come for comfort and a drink from their water bottles while they play and communicate together outside.
