Women's Soccer Pre-Season Wrap-up!

by Stephanie Norell and Lauren Hickey

Hi everyone!

Stephanie Norell and Lauren Hickey here. As two seniors on the women's Soccer team, we will be your eyes and ears to all that is women's soccer here at Eastern.

.Just the thought of it is pretty horrifying. But everyone came in shape and we had a very successful pre-season this year! Fearing the "fun" Beep Test and the "beloved" Mile Run, we women soccer players knew we had our work cut out for us. But we seniors are very happy to report that along with a solid core group of able returners, a swell group of confident freshmen (and one very special sophomore transfer) came to join us this year! Thanks to the famed duo of Coach D and Coach Kenny, our butts are being whipped into shape via P90X and we are moving in a positive direction as a team. It's looking like a great year to repeat as LEC champions!

As the result of a well-fought alumni game this past weekend, as well as two other tough scrimmages, this team is ready to play our first games this weekend at Springfield College. Our first nemesis- Westfield State College.

We hope to come back with two W's and dry clothing!

The support is appreciated!

Men's Soccer Pre-Season Wrap-up!

By Sean Capezzone and Rick Emery

Hey Guys! Cakes and Rick here!

Pre-season week was been the best we have ever been a part of. All of the players showed up in shape and ready to train. Everyone passed the fitness tests with flying colors and everyone's skills are on point.

The week started off with perfect conditions for three-a-days (misty and high 60's) and gradually increased to the summer weather we grew accustomed to (reaching the low 90's).

We return multiple all-conference selections (Aaron Smiles, Carl Appel and Brad Fletcher) and show a lot of promising young talent with the incoming freshman. With having a young team we are fortunate to return most of our defensive line to solidify the back of the team. The main concern of this season is scoring goals, but with Rick "Nino" Emery up top anything is possible. All jokes aside, we are at a loss up top with the departure of Maxim Fantl and Nick Boretti in the offensive third, but the recruitment of Romaro Johnson, Mitch Power and Tommy Vear give us a major threats offensively. Not to mention, our returning forwards Matt Furman and Corey Tobler, who had a goal and assist versus Mitchell College on Sunday, have really proven themselves over the past few weeks.

We've had the good fortune of playing two exhibition matches to sharpen our skills before the actual season kicks off this weekend at the Babson Classic where we will look to defend our title against MIT and Babson. After the pre-season, it seems our strength seems to lie within our midfield where Sean Collins and Jon DeCasanova (who had a brilliant volley against Mitchell College this past Sunday), have been pingin' passes and shredding defenses. Also, the addition of Luke Capezzone, Nate Mozian, and Kyle Surprenant (among others) give us plenty of speed and skill throughout the midfield.

We plan on spending this upcoming week sharpening our play and tactics in order to be able to have a strong start to our season up at Babson this weekend.

We will be sure to keep you all updated on recent results and give you a behind the scenes look at the team as we look to repeat our Little East title this season.

Thank you for the support!

Volleyball Pre-Season Wrap-up!

By Gianna Trombino and Rachael Joy

Hi Everyone!

We'd like to welcome you to the Eastern Volleyball blog...

We'll discuss lots of team-related things here and hopefully just give you a little inside scoop as to all the things we do/talk about/hope for as a T.E.A.M!

So, who are WE?

There will be two of us writing this blog...each week we will switch roles, so one week you will hear from Rachael Joy and the next you will hear from Gianna Trombino. For this first entry though, it's the both of us!

Pre-season has officially come to a close and we've made it out alive! The week was rough at times with hard practices twice a day ( with some lifting) but we all feel it was definitly worth it...we've come a long way in such a short time!

Well, we guess the first thing we should discuss is our new coach. If you've been following us at all, you would know that we've been having lots of changes in our coaching staff over the past couple years. Our new coach, Fran Vandermeer...well, to put it bluntly- WE HOPE SHE IS HERE FOR GOOD! She's absolutly amazing with great organization and coaching talent and we all feel beyond lucky to have her. She finds a perfect balance between complimenting our existing talents while still giving us lots of important new feedback and constructive criticism. I think we all feel like we've learned SO much the past week in terms of passing and setting techniques, team bonding methods, game strategy and communication...and the most important part, "BOUNCING BACK" from our past couple years...that has become the theme of the season!  She works very well with our existing assistant coach, Peter Maneggia (who led the team last year by himself for half the season) and they are a funny 1-2 punch. We are very fortunate to have them both as our leaders.

To leave pre-season with a bang, we had a wonderful day at the beach filled with lots of conditioning from Coach Pete, sweat, fun, and an AWESOME home cooked meal from Coach Fran ( who we have decided we are going to call "Frandermeer!") We worked hard for the first half of our time and then were rewarded with some great swim time and laying out...and now we all have terrible sports bra and spandex tans!

We're really looking forward to this upcoming season, which opens up on Wednesday at home @ 7PM vs Roger Williams. We think that everyone is going to be very impressed with the team that we have become over this week...it's a brand new start for us.

Until next time!

-Rachael and Gianna
