Eastern Presents Phoenix New Play Series

Written by Kate Harner

Willimantic, Conn. - Eastern Connecticut State University's Performing Arts Department invites Eastern students, staff and faculty, as well as the general public, to the Phoenix New Play Series at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 in the Student Center Theatre. Admission is free.

This year's New Play is "Evolution to Dust," written by Eastern alumna Heidi Stearns-Groeger. After graduating from Eastern, Groeger attended Chapman University in California to pursue her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Scriptwriting. She wrote "Evolution to Dust" as her MFA thesis play. Students Kara Williams and Max Loignon will direct the performance. The cast includes April Blymiller, Ben Donnel, Danny Van Duong, Ben Friedman, Frank-Thomas Grogan, Craig Harlow, Heather McDonald, Hilary Osborn and Luke Reinwald.

The Phoenix New Play Series are rehearsed readings of new plays. Ellen Brodie, professor/director of theatre, has organized this year's series with the help of Shane Kegler, president of Eastern's Drama Society.

"The series helps to develop the creative process of the playwright by allowing playwrights to hear their works read aloud, which helps them with the next step in the writing process," said Kegler. "A feedback session will follow the reading."
