### Basic Information

The Developmental Mathematics Program consists of four mathematics courses, which are:

MAT 098 | Elementary Algebra | 3 credit course (none of which count towards graduation) (offered Summer sessions) |

MAT 101 | Intermediate Algebra | 3 credit course (all of which count towards graduation) |

MAT 101W | Intermediate Algebra w/ Workshop | 4 credit course (of which 3 count towards graduation) Covers MAT 098 and MAT 101 in one semester Requires the use of software Requires MAC participation |

MAT 101P | Intermediate Algebra Plus | 5 credit course (of which 3 count towards graduation) Covers MAT 098 and MAT 101 in one semester Requires the use of software Has daily online problem solving Requires MAC participation |

**Required Textbook**

The textbook **used for all four courses** is JoAnne Thomasson and Bob Pesut, Experiencing Introductory and Intermediate Algebra Through Functions and Graphs, 3nd edition, Prentice Hall

**Technology Used**

- TI-83/84 Graphing Calculator in all four courses

TI-83/84 Graphing Calculator Guidebook by Dr. Davis - MyLab/Mastering( formerly MyMathLab/CourseCompass) which is required in MAT 101W and MAT 101P and optional, as determined by instructor, in MAT 098 and MAT 101

### What is the CSU System Board of Trustees (BOT) math proficiency requirement?

By action of the BOT, students shall be required to successfully complete MAT 098 and MAT 101P **within their first 24 attempted academic credit hours (whether taken at Eastern or elsewhere)**. Students who do not successfully complete MAT 098 within this period shall not be allowed to register for credit courses at any University within the Connecticut State University System (CSUS) until they complete this course or an equivalent course elsewhere.

### What should I do if I am out of compliance with the BOT math proficiency requirement?

If you are out of compliance with the BOT math proficiency requirement you will not be allowed to register for additional courses unless your registration includes MAT 098.

### What should I do if I fail MAT 098?

If you fail MAT 098 in any given semester you must take the course again the following semester.

### What if I need/choose to take a math course elsewhere?

You can take an equivalent math course elsewhere. To do so, you must submit to the Registrarâ€™s office at Eastern an **Approval to Take Courses Outside of Eastern form** which is located at the Advising Center or the School of Continuing Education. Refer to the Course equivalency information website for assists with course selection. After successfully completing the course, you must have your transcripts sent immediately to Eastern.

### What is the Mathematics department class and/or workshop attendance policy?

For MAT 098, 101, 101W and 101P, it is the Mathematics Department policy that a student whose **absences exceed 20% of class meetings for the semester will receive a grade of “F” for the course.** Further details will be found in your course syllabus.

### What is the Mathematics Achievement Center (MAC) participation policy and does it apply to me?

**All students enrolled in MAT 098, 101W and MAT 101P are required to participate in the MAC.** While in the MAC, various services are offered to aid students in the successful completion of their math course. MAC participation will be counted as 10% of your final course grade.

**For MAT 098 and MAT 101W Students:**

Your grade will be based on the percentage of the **required 18 hours** that you complete. Note this is approximately one hour and thirty minutes per week, which is less than half of the time a student should be studying for a 4 credit course. For example, if you complete 16 hours then your MAC participation grade will be 16/18= 89%.

You are required to complete the first 9 hours by the close of the MAC on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 and the remaining 9 hours by the closed of the MAC on Friday, Decembe 6, 2013. **Note that your midterm grade calculation will be based on completing the first 9 hours in the MAC by the deadline mentioned above. Again, student hours will only be recorded when the MAC is officially open!**

**For MAT 101P Students:**

Your grade will be based on the percentage of the **required 27 hours** that you complete. Note this is approximately one hour and thirty minutes per week, which is less than half of the time a student should be studying for a 4 credit course. For example, if you complete 22 hours then your MAC participation grade will be 22/27= 81%.

You are required to complete the first 15 hours by the close of the MAC on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 and the remaining 12 hours by the closed of the MAC on Friday, December 6, 2013. **Note that your midterm grade calculation will be based on completing the first 15 hours in the MAC by the deadline mentioned above. Again, student hours will only be recorded when the MAC is officially open!**

### Are there any additional materials to aid in my successful completion of my developmental mathematics course?
