The Director of the MAC is Mrs. Kathleen Dale.  Mrs. Dale coordinates the student tutors, all of whom are selected for their math ability by the Mathematics Department faculty.  All of the student tutors are also certified.  Math faculty will also be staffing the MAC.  You can contact Mrs. Dale at  dalek@easternct.edu or 465-4589.

Who must go to the Mathematics Achievement Center?

All students enrolled in MAT 098, MAT 101W and MAT 101P must go to the MAC.  As stated on your course syllabus, MAC participation will be counted as 10% of your final course grade.

For MAT 098 and MAT 101W Students:

Your grade will be based on the percentage of the required 18 hours that you complete.  Note this is approximately one hour and thirty minutes per week, which is less than half of the time a student should be studying for a 4 credit course.  For example, if you complete 16 hours then your MAC participation grade will be 16/18= 89%.

You are required to complete the first 9 hours by the close of the MAC on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 and remaining 9 hours by the closed of the MAC on Friday, May 4, 2012.  Again, student hours will only be recorded when the MAC is officially open!

For MAT 101P Students:

Your grade will be based on the percentage of the required 27 hours that you complete.  Note this is approximately one hour and thirty minutes per week, which is less than half of the time a student should be studying for a 4 credit course.  For example, if you complete 22 hours then your MAC participation grade will be 22/27= 81%.

You are required to complete the first 15 hours by the close of the MAC on Wednesday, February 29, 2012 and remaining 12 hours by the closed of the MAC on Friday, May 4, 2012.  Again, student hours will only be recorded when the MAC is officially open!

Why should I go to the Mathematics Achievement Center?
As part of the Academic Services Center, the MAC is here to make your Eastern educational experience as successful and stress free as possible. While in the MAC, students may be engaged in the following activities:
  • Take assessment tests
  • Work with the TI-83/84/89 calculator
  • Work with one of the previously mentioned software products on a computer
  • Have a conference
  • Homework
  • Work through practice sheets for MAT 098, MAT 101, MAT 101W, or MAT 101P
  • Review quizzes or test
  • Study skills, work on time management and lecture notes
  • Tutoring
  • Use of applicable textbooks

What happens when I show up at the Mathematics Achievement Center?
First, you need to bring your Eastern ID because you will need to scan in and out of the MAC. Secondly, you need to sign in and out on the login sheet in order to receive credit for the time spent in the MAC. You will only receive credit for your time when the MAC is open for business. You will not be credited with any time if you show up before the MAC is open.

Do I need an appointment?
Tutoring is available on a non-appointment basis.

Does the Mathematics Achievement Center offer one-on-one tutoring?
The MAC does not guarantee that you will receive one-on-one tutoring.  The volume of students in the MAC will determine whether tutoring occurs in small groups or individually.

Where should I go if I really need one-on-one tutoring?
You should make an appointment at Tutoring Services, also located in Library Room 108.  Please note that when you arrive for that scheduled appointment, you will still need to scan in and out of the MAC and sign in and out on the login sheet if you are enrolled in MAT 098, MAT 101W or MAT 101P.
