Tips for Managing Your Budget

Tips for Managing Your Budget

  • Create a worksheet in Excel to keep track of your balance and the documents you submit to Fiscal Affairs.
  • Reserve a portion of your budget for copier, postage, and on-line office supplies.  You can use the amounts charged to your budget in the prior fiscal year as an estimate.
  • Don’t forget to adjust your worksheet for the actual amount paid versus the amount submitted on the purchase requisitions.
  • Review open commitments for purchase orders that can be closed.
  • Review your budget report for any posting errors.
  • When buying new items, don’t forget about incidental costs like maintenance, warranties, toner cartridges, etc..
  • Supplies ordered online from Staples will be charged back to your departmental budget so make sure you leave room in your budget for the things you order.
