Secondary Education Certificate

Secondary Education Certificate

Students seeking to teach English on the secondary level are encouraged to consider the concentration in English for Secondary Education.

Students in other concentrations who plan to purse secondary-level certification must take the following courses either as part of their concentration (when possible) or as electives:

  • ENG 329 Adolescent Literature,
  • an advanced writing course (met by our gateway writing intensive course requirements, ENG 204, ENG 205, or ENG 206),
  • two advanced courses in the grammar and history of English (ENG 340 Modern American Grammar and ENG 341 History and Development of the English Language), and
  • a historical survey in literature (ENG 212 or ENG 213 or ENG 214 or ENG 215 or ENG 223 or ENG 356).

Note: ENG 240 The Study of Language does not meet the requirement for an advanced course in the grammar and history of English.
