Georgia

Since 2000, Earth Science Professor James Hyatt and others have taken students to Providence Canyon State Park in Lumpkin, Georgia, to examine geologic records of massive human-induced erosion.

This work has introduced Eastern students to sediment coring, ground penetrating radar and laser scanning.  In addition to environmental earth science students, more recent trips have examined the art and science of the park through the participation of Visual Arts Professor and landscape painter Andy Jones.  Jones and Hyatt have even used the intersection of geology and landscape art to create an interdisciplinary cluster of courses called “Art Rocks,” in which students from both disciplines have visited Providence Canyon State Park as well as Connecticut locales to explore the earth from both geological and aesthetic perspectives.
