Praxis I Exam Alert

Dear Prospective Teacher Education Applicant:

The CT State Department of Education regulations involving teacher certification require applicants to Education Preparation Programs to provide evidence of competence in basic academic skills as determined through a standardized test, such as the Praxis I.  Therefore, applicants must pass the Praxis I test battery by earning the following minimum scores:

  • Reading (#5712): 156
  • Writing (#5722):  162
  • Mathematics (#5732): 150

Candidates may WAIVE the Praxis I test requirement if they have earned a minimum Verbal/Mathematics combined SAT score of 1080 with no less than a score of 450 in each of the two subtests; or a minimum score of 22 in Verbal and 19 in Mathematics on the ACT test; or a minimum Verbal/Mathematics combined GRE score of 297 with no less than a 150 on the Verbal, 144 on the Mathematics, and 4.5 on the Writing subtests.  You must submit the official score report from the test on your CARE application to be eligible for a Praxis I waiver.

Note: Candidates for the Education Program are required to submit evidence of a minimum of 50 service hours interacting with PreK-12 students in an established educational organization, including at least 20 hours in an organization with learners whose background is different from that of the candidate.  Hours must be documented using the “Service Hours Clock Form” above.
