Preface

The Eastern Connecticut State University self-study represents more than a year of effort by the university community. The process began in February 1999 with the appointment of Dr. Roy Wilson, Professor of Environmental Earth Science, and Dr. Rhona Free, Professor of Economics, as co-chairs. A steering committee with members from across the university was then appointed. Its role was to review and comment on each draft of the self-study. Members of the steering committee are listed on page ii.

Writing committees were formed for each standard. The writing committees held several meetings in which they discussed the goals and methods of the self- study. The co-chairs gave the writing committees written guidelines which outlined the description, appraisal, and projection format of the study. The co- chairs used the NEASC Self-Study Guide to prepare the guidelines. Chairs of the writing committees are listed on page iii.

In April 1999 Dr. Peggy Maki, former Associate Director of NEASC, joined us for a kick-off dinner at which she addressed President Carter, members of his staff, and the NEASC Steering and Writing Committees. She explained the goals and methods of the NEASC self-study process.

In May 1999 the first draft was submitted to the co-chairs. The process outlined below was followed for each of the three subsequent drafts during February, March, and April 2000.

¥ The draft is submitted to the co-chairs by the writing committee chair.

¥ The draft is posted on the ECSU NEASC Website.

¥ The university community is notified that the draft is available on the Website and is urged to comment on any aspect of the draft. An immediate e-mail reply process is part of the Website.

¥ Hard copies are available in department offices, and two open meetings are held in which any member of the university community may comment or ask questions concerning the draft.

¥ A steering committee meeting is held. The meeting takes the form of a workshop in which each member is asked to review a standard and comment on a review sheet.

¥ The comments from the Website, the open meetings, and the steering committee meetings are collated and included in the standards.

¥ This process is repeated for each of the three subsequent drafts.

¥ The final draft is edited and published during May 2000. During this process we have maintained as open a process as possible. We are satisfied that each member of the university community has had the opportunity to participate in or comment on the self-study.
