Eastern has been presented with an extraordinary opportunity to provide substantially increased financial aid to students in majors related to biological and health sciences.  When you contribute to any of four ECSU Foundation scholarships, your contribution will be doubled and you will help increase near term financial aid to these students even more dramatically.

The Jeffrey P. Ossen Family Foundation has agreed to match contributions to four key scholarships up to a total of $10,000 per year per scholarship for three years.  You may choose to direct your gift to any of these scholarship funds in any combination.  Below are brief descriptions of the four to guide you.

The Dr. Robert N. Horrocks, Dr. Daniel B. Switchenko and Dr. Neil Williams Founders of Health and Physical Education Endowed Fund was established in 2002 to support department needs and/or scholarships. The scholarship will be awarded to a student with financial need majoring in HPE or Sport & Leisure Management.

The J. Donald McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship was established in 2014 by Dr. Robert Jennette, Eastern’s Director of Health Services, to honor Dr. McLaughlin, Eastern’s first physician.  It is intended to support deserving students with financial need who are planning to serve others as health professionals, to teach others as medical educators, or to engage in biomedical research.

The Student Research Scholarship fund was recently launched by Dr. Marc R. Freeman ’93, a nationally recognized medical researcher and Associate Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Neurology at the UMass Medical School, and his wife, Amy Sheehan ’93, with their substantial initial gift and multi-year pledge.  This fund will support Eastern students for research work or research internships in the sciences – including room and board, research materials and stipends.

The Sidney Vernon, M.D. Endowed Scholarship was established in 2000 by Sheridan Vernon to honor the memory of his late father, Dr. Sidney Vernon, who practiced medicine in the Willimantic area for many years.  It is intended for a student with financial need who is studying physical science, biology, pre-professional programs or biochemistry.
