| Tibetan Mandalas - December 2007 |
| Two of the Dalai Lama’s senior monks from Namgyal monastery visited Eastern the first week in December to create a sand mandala. The Namgyal monastery is the North American home to the Dalai Lama. The sand mandala took several days to create and specifically represented prayers for peace. It was created in the Akus Gallery where visitors watched as the monks strategically place each grain of sand. During University Hour (December 5, 2007) the monks gave a talk about the Mandala. The following weekend they dismantled the sand and took it to the river where the sand was returned to its source. Students in the Asian Art and Culture classes worked with the monks, but all Visual art majors were invited to participate. |
