Cakes and Lemonade for Katrina Survivors |
Cakes almost too gorgeous to eat went on sale Sept. 16 in the lobby of Gelsi-Young Hall in an effort to raise money for the Student Government Association’s (SGA) Katrina Relief Fund. The cake sale raised $1,000. Also, senior Adam Phaiah, junior Charlie Hill II, and their friend Todd Jordan opened up a lemonade stand for thirsty Eastern faculty, staff and students in an effort to raise Katrina Relief funds. Bank of America President Named
Distinguished Business Executive in Residence |
Susan Rottner was introduced as Eastern Connecticut State University’s
2005–06 Business-Executive-in-Residence at a luncheon in her honor on Sept. 16. Rottner is president of Bank of America—Connecticut, just the latest role in a career in the banking industry spanning more than 30 years. She is also head of the Private Bank for Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.
“When I read that you have committed your life to bettering the lives of others, that’s what service is all about,” Eastern President David G. Carter told Rottner. “You serve as a beacon. You are proof that you can be successful in business yet remain a humane individual. You hold true to the values that have made America great.”
“I am humbled and feel privileged to be appointed to this position,” said Rottner. “I hope to share some of my own experiences in the banking world, including some that you may not have been privy to. I look forward to a great year as executive-in residence.”

On Sept. 13, nearly 1,500 Eastern students, faculty and staff, along with hundreds of area residents heard David Corn, Washington D.C. editor of The Nation, and Richard Lowry, editor of The National Review, engage in a spirited debate on America’s involvement in the war in Iraq. Corn said “Bush blew it.” Lowry disagreed, saying that the president’s decision to go to war was supported by numerous Democrats.
On Sept. 14, four Eastern students who served in active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan led a panel discussion on their experiences. Victorious Felder, Jeremiah Berard, Brandon Schingh, and Zachary Britt all served at least one tour of active duty in Iraq or Afghanistan. Their conversations added a distinctly human element that often gets lost in the daily news. Bolt said although he wanted to get away from home, the war changed his thinking. “When my unit came back to North Carolina, I wanted to run home. When I finally got back, I didn’t leave my house for a good month.” Victorious Felder smiled and commented that whoever at the Pentagon felt that two weeks was ample time to file the necessary paperwork to leave your job, pack your life, and tell your wife and young child that you had to go to war, probably had never had to do so. All four student veterans agreed that there isn’t one American serviceman or woman who wouldn’t rather be home right now and said the nation’s number one priority should be to find the most expeditious way of accomplishing that objective.

Head Track Coach Frank Poulin, 400 meter runner David Nicholson of Windsor, cross country runner Erin Nolan of Tolland, and Athletic Director Joyce Wong cut the ribbon during a ceremony to dedicate Eastern’s new eight-lane track and field facility.
“This facility was a long time coming,” said Eastern President David G. Carter. “I thank the men and women on the team, as well as Dr. Wong. Thanks to the diligence and hard work by many people. What you see here, we did as a community.”

Even with several able staff and student photographers in the Office of University Relations, given the many events and activities of the energetic and imaginative students, faculty, and staff at Eastern, we can’t get to all the events that happen on campus. We do want to continue to encourage the campus community to notify us in advance of events (call Mr. Nick Lacy at 465-5702 or Ms. Bev Canfield at 465-5735). However, if we cannot get to your activity, there’s another option for you to consider. At no cost to your department, we can make available to you one or more recyclable 35mm cameras as needed. Call Ms. Canfield if an event is coming up and you want to take advantage of this option. |
