Faculty Art Exhibit Opens Year at Akus Gallery |
The artistic talents of the full-time and adjunct professors in the Department of Visual Arts are on display through Oct. 6 at the Julian Akus Gallery, located in the lower level of Shafer Hall at the corner of Windham and Valley Streets. The exhibit, which opened Aug. 25, represents a variety of art media. The exhibit showcases the works of Professors Imna Arroyo, Lula Mae Blocton, Sharon Butler, June Bisantz-Evans, Andy Jones, Qimin Liu and Claudia Widdis. Adjunct faculty represented include Peter Bill, Rebecca Brine, Phillip Buntin, Belinda Gabryl, Tom Hebert, Muriel Miller, Rhea Nowak, Afarin Rahmanifar, Beverly Roy, Eileen Schnyder and Mark Williams.

Two prominent political analysts will visit campus on Sept. 13 to discuss the war in Iraq. David Corn, Washington, D.C. editor of The Nation, will debate Richard Lowry, editor of the National Review, at 7 p.m. in the Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium. The debate kicks off a three-day discussion on the war. On Sept. 14, students who served in the U.S. military in Iraq will describe their experiences at 3 p.m. in Shafer Auditorium. Films and information tables
will be available under a tent outside of Webb Hall from 1 - 5 p.m. for anyone wishing to engage in open discussion.

The Unity Center, in conjunction with the Women’s Center, Campus Ministry, Alcohol and Other Drugs (A.O.D.) staff, and other on-campus service organizations, will host its annual “Welcome Back” picnic on Sept. 13 from 4 – 7 p.m.The picnic takes place on the organization’s adjoining facilities on High Street. A disc jockey will provide entertainment.

“Meaningful Meals,” a social event that takes place every Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Unity Center, begins its third year on Sept. 15. Psychology professor Margaret Letterman facilitates the program and says it’s designed to providea gathering place for all students. “We want students to experience diversity on the campus. The food is free.Don’t come if you’re watching your weight.”

The Beijing Opera, courtesy of the National Academy of Chinese Theater Arts, will perform at Eastern on Sept. 21 in Shafer Auditorium. Regarded as the most aesthetically pleasing of more than 300 native Chinese forms, this presentation offers a rare opportunity for the campus community and the public to experience an extraordinaryperformance.
