“Real Leaders Get Educated.”

It’s already well-known that Lorelei Richey, Ben Kirk, Shelley McCauley Browning, and Kendall Exume are active in Eastern’s Student Government Association.  Now, they are certified leaders, after attending two days of rigorous training in Nevada sponsored by the American Association of Student Government Associations.   All four students passed the final national exam of the two-day student leader certification program. The program presents case studies on leadership and teaches student leaders what it takes to be a good leader.

Eastern President David Carter delivers keynote address

Eastern President David Carter delivered the keynote address at the Windsor based Archer Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church’s celebration of the life of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 17.  Carter said Dr. King’s dream of equality and opportunity is rooted in having courage to pursue excellence, courage to exemplify character by taking the high road, having the courage to help others, and the grace to say, ‘thank you.’ He encouraged young people to never give up on their dreams.

March 12 -- BOWLATHON, Eastern’s popular scholarship fundraiser, takes place at Willi Bowl in North Windham.  The BOWLATHON has become an annual tradition involving Eastern community and local businesses.  While Eastern employees and local residents battle it out for pledges and pins, the real winners of this high-spirited event are the Eastern students from area high schools who receive scholarships from the event’s proceeds.  More than $12,000 was raised last year.

Proceeds from the BOWLATHON help fund the ECSU Foundation Community Youth Scholarship which supports first-year Eastern students from 14 area high schools.

“We are looking forward to an even larger attendance than we enjoyed last year,” says Ken DeLisa, vice president for institutional advancement.  “Because of the wonderful level of participation at last year’s BOWLATHON, we raised 30 percent more money than the prior year for the ECSU Foundation Community Youth Scholarship.  We are on track to having another great event, and I look forward to seeing everyone on March 12.”

Students, faculty and staff, area businesses and the high schools benefiting from the event are encouraged to send teams to participate in the BOWLATHON.  There are shifts at 11 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m.  For pledge sheets, team registration forms and additional information, please call Eastern’s BOWLATHON Coordinator, Chris Carollo at (860) 465-4513.
