Accounting Banquet

Attorney General Richard BlumenthalAttorney General Richard Blumenthal was the guest speaker at the annual Accounting Banquet on May 3 in the Paul E. Johnson, Sr. Community Conference Room. The attorney general reviewed a number of corporate fraud cases his office has investigated and/or litigated, indicating that professional accountants were a valuable resource in his investigations. “With their help, we are able to cover $13 for every dollar spent in the Attorney General’s Office. There is a crying need for more accounting expertise in law enforcement.”

Account Professor Moh’d Rujoub reminded the audience that Eastern’s accounting program is the largest accounting undergraduate program in Connecticut, with Eastern students receiving the highest pass rate on the Connecticut CPA exam two years in a row.

Detective Wright Retires

Det. Louise WrightLouise Wright, who made history at Eastern when she was named the University’s first detective in 2005, has retired after 20 years of service. In March, Detective Wright was recognized as the 2006 Officer of the Year by the Connecticut Association of Women Police for her outstanding dedication to public safety at Eastern. She helped develop Eastern’s bicycle patrol, the department’s Open Rec Night, and its policy on community-based policing. One such example was her response to an emergency medical call at Crandall Hall in 1990 that resulted in the delivery of a 9- pound, 8-ounce baby girl. Detective Wright was well-known for her involvement with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, but says her proudest moment was being selected by Eastern students to deliver the Baccalaureate Address on Commencement Day 1999. “I will continue working, through Christian education, to help young people become trusted, respected young adults who make good choices in life.”

Eastern visits Providence Canyon State Park in Georgia

Eastern Connecticut State University Environmental Earth Science Professor James Hyatt and Eastern Art Professor Andy Jones will show how geology and art may be combined at a special presentation on June 7 from 1–4 p.m. during Geology and Art Day at Providence Canyon State Park in Lumpkin, GA.

The program will include geological information obtained over the past seven years through scientific research such as vibra-coring. This type of study removes soil samples from up to 20 feet below the canyon floors. The cores will be available for observation during the program where the materials that were collected from the depths of the canyons may be viewed. These geological materials and information will be incorporated into artistic techniques. Professor Jones, the designer of the Connecticut quarter, will explain how he uses the sands from the canyons along with other mediums to create vista and landscape artwork.
