Kristen Schroeder Wins Chemistry Award |
Kristen Schroeder, a junior from Manchester majoring in Environmental Earth Science, has been named the recipient of the 2007 CRC Press Chemistry Award at Eastern. General Chemistry Coordinator Charles Wynn announced the award on March 9. The award brings with it a commemorative scroll and copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics published by the Chemical Rubber Company.
In addition to being a first-rate science student, Schroeder serves on the organizing committee of the Windham Special Olympics, the board of directors for the Willimantic Whitewater Partnership, is a volunteer with the Mansfield Nature Area, and has completed a year of service with Americorps at Eastern. After she graduates, she plans to earn a master’s degree in secondary education and become a high school science teacher.

MGM Casting Director Speaks to Eastern Theatre Students |

Paul Weber, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) casting director in Los Angeles, visited campus and presented a six-hour Cold Reading Audition Seminar for Eastern Theatre students and faculty on March 12. “Having the head of MGM Casting at Eastern was an outstanding opportunity for all involved as he generously worked with and critiqued each student,” said Ellen Faith Brodie, director of theatre. “We look forward to future collaborations as the Eastern Theatre program becomes bi-coastal!”

Eastern to Host Liberal Arts Career Fair |

Nearly 90 corporations, small businesses, government agencies, institutions of higher education and social services organizations converged on Eastern’s campus on March 14 to participate in the 2007 Liberal Arts Career Fair. The day-long fair is sponsored by Eastern’s Office of Career Service, which also hosted an education fair on April 3. Numerous graduate schools and more than two dozen public school systems looking for teachers were on hand to interview education majors. Smoke Out Seeks to Educate Smokers |
Judicial Officer Kim Silcox engages students in a graphic demonstration of what a healthy lung looks like compared to a smoker’s lung to help students learn ways to stop smoking on March 14. The Smoke Out took place during Eastern’s “Jump into Spring Break” Week of March 12-15, sponsored by the Substance Abuse Prevention Office and the Division of Student Affairs. Students were provided with substance abuse prevention and healthy lifestyle messages and programming to encourage healthy and safe behavior during Spring Break, a notorious time for binge drinking and unsafe behavior among college students. The three days of programming included fun events such as an ice cream social and cookout, as well as to serious lectures on the effects of alcohol, drugs, and binge eating. Students got honest and frank information about how to stay safe.

Jail N Bail Raises More than $1,000! |
Eastern students, faculty, and staff raised more than $1,000 to support Habitat for Humanity during its popular Jail-N-Bail fundraiser on Feb. 28. Several people served as jailbirds including Amy Coffey, Susan DeRosa, Teri Richardson, Margaret Letterman, Kim Silcox, Theresa Severance, Terrell Adgers, and Peter Bachchiochi. Above, Bachchioci and Teri Richardson, administrative assistant in the Department of Psychology, stay locked up until they raise enough to be released. Proceeds will go toward the Habitat for Humanity house being constructed on Ives Street in Willimantic. If you made a pledge, organizers are asking that you make the check out to the ECSU Foundation with Habitat for Humanity in the memo line and send it to your special jailbird or to Peter Bachiochi in the Department of Psychology.

June Bisantz Exhibits “Word and Image” at Central Connecticut State University |
June Bisantz, professor of visual arts, presents her “Word and Image” exhibit in the Chen Art Galleries at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, March 29 through April 13. The exhibit is part of The Languages of Images Conference taking place at CCSU. The public is invited. Admission is free.

• Students Ashley Gomes, Michelle Bruneau, Meredith Merchant, Mathew Mitchell, Lindsay Raymond, and Shawn Slattery, along with Health and Physical Education Professor Charles Chatterton, were showcased on WTIC-TV/Fox News at Ten, on WDRC-AM, and the “Wayne Norman Show” on WILI-AM after returning from building homes for Katrina victims in New Orleans.
