Eastern Unveils Portrait of Former President Carter |

Eastern unveiled a portrait of David G. Carter, the University¡¯sfifth president and now chancellor of the Connecticut State University System, on March 14 in the Reading Room of the J. Eugene Smith Library. Eastern President Elsa Nu?ez led the unveiling ceremony. Manchester artist and author Hans Weiss, a member of the ECSU Foundation, Inc., created the painting, which will hang with portraits of Eastern¡¯s previous presidents in the J. Eugene Smith Library.
Carter became the fifth president of Eastern Connecticut State University on April 2, 1988 ¡ª the first African American president of a four-year institution of higher education in New England. He led Eastern through a period of enrollment growth, campus expansion, and academic progress, leaving in February 2006 to become chancellor of the Connecticut State University System (CSUS).
Eastern President Elsa Nunez told Carter, ¡°The piece of your character that I admire most is that students say there wasn¡¯t once where they met with you that they didn¡¯t learn something. The admiration the students have for you is the greatest contribution you have made to Eastern.¡±

Bowlathon Raises $13,000 |
Thanks to the generous support of faculty, students and staff, the ECSU Foundation¡¯s popular annual Bowlathon generated more than $13,000 for the Community Youth Scholarship program. 108 bowlers participated in the day-long event, which took place on March 3 at Willi Bowl in North Windham.
Danielle Phillips ¡¯03 was the top female bowler during the morning shift, rolling an average 171. Steve Vesci was the top male bowler, with a 161 average. Kim Crone won top female honors during the afternoon shift with a 146 average. Guy Blackburn won top male bowler in the afternoon with a 164 average.
Windham Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co., Inc. served as ¡°King Pin¡± sponsor for the bowlathon, while Windham Wal-Mart and Charter Communications were ¡°High Roller¡± sponsors.

Top team honors went to Millstone with a 145 average. Millstone was led by Guy Blackburn, Darren St. Ours, and Carly Gene. Millstone also won top fundraising team with $3,455 ($157 average per bowler).

Bush Economic Advisor Speaks at Eastern

Katherine Baicker, a member of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) in the Bush Administration, spoke to students on March 8 in the Paul E. Johnson, Sr. Community Conference Room of the J. Eugene Smith Library. Baicker discussed, ¡°The Future of U.S. and Global Economies.¡±
An associate professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Baicker was nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed in 2005 by the U.S. Senate. She specializes in health economics, welfare and public finance, with a specific focus on financing health insurance, spending on public programs and fiscal federalism.
Above, Baicker is presented a gift from Brian Sullivan, Eastern¡¯s student representative on the CSUS Board of Trustees. Baicker¡¯s presentation was sponsored by Eastern¡¯s David T. Chase Free Enterprise Institute.

Eastern Presents Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Service Awards

Two Eastern Connecticut State University students, a staff member, and a Hartford-area minister were honored at Eastern¡¯s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Service Awards Reception and Awards program on Feb. 27. Keynote speaker Dana Rondel ¡¯93 spoke of making a difference in the world ¡°one mind at a time.¡±
Student awardee Starsheemar Byrum ¡¯07 is majoring in English with a minor in Women Studies. She is vice president of the Student Government Association, treasurer of the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, a resident assistant in Laurel Hall, and a member of United Voices of Praise, Eastern¡¯s gospel choir.
Kevin Douglas also received a Distinguished Service award in the student category. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work degree and expects to graduate in 2008. Also a graduate of Norwich Free Academy, Douglas is treasurer of Eastern¡¯s International Students Association, is involved with Amnesty International, and has helped building homes in Louisiana through Habitat for Humanity.
¡°Both of these students are truly remarkable. Their contributions to the campus community and their commitment to the ideals of Dr. King are exemplary,¡± said Laura Tordenti, vice president for student affairs. ¡°And while they are making a difference in the community, they are also high academic achievers.¡±
Receiving the award in the community member category was Rev. Dr. Alvan Johnson, Jr., who has served as the pastor of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Bloomfield for 28 years.
Dwight Bachman received the award in the faculty/staff category. He has been the public relations officer at Eastern since 1990. ¡°Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Look Back,¡± a 12-part television series Bachman produced while at Satellite News Channel in 1983, is aired each year by Eastern¡¯s television station, WECS-TV.
