On Feb. 1, Lowell Boyers came to Eastern to speak about his Akus Gallery exhibit, “What We Long to Know.” The collection will be on display in the Gallery through March 1. In an introduction to his collection, Boyers said, “Making paintings is an invitation to create some silent alchemy. “If the viewer is willing to engage, to cross the threshold I provide, something is going to happen.” Following his speech, Boyers encouraged guests to view and make comments about his paintings. He also said, “I think the creative imagination also holds our perceptual world together like a great net we throw over our meaningful lives trying to encompass as much as we can. . . or as little, I suppose. He views his paintings “as poems with no beginning or end.” Boyers has worked on his collection for years. He exhibits his paintings around the world, and he is currently represented by the Nicholas Robinson Gallery in New York City, where he resides.

Borromeo String Quartet Perform at Eastern |

The internationally acclaimed Borromeo String Quartet (BSQ) returned to Eastern Connecticut State University on March 8. The quartet’s performance was the third event in this year’s highly-celebrated Arts and Lecture Series at Eastern. The Borromeo String Quartet has established itself as one of the most popular string quartets performing today. The group, which last played at Eastern in December 2003, is considered “simply the best” by The Boston Globe. The Chicago Tribune calls the BSQ “a remarkably accomplished string quartet, not simply for its high technical polish and refined tone, but more importantly for the searching musical insights it brings.”
