Teddy Bears Get a Home |

This year’s Fifth Annual Teddy Bear Drive collected 434 stuffed toys for the Holy Family Home and Shelter, bringing the cumulative total to 1,071 in five years. This year’s total more than doubled the previous high of 203 collected in 2004. This year’s collection of stuffed animals ranged from bears, dogs, cats, and dolls, to elephants, monkeys, tigers, penguins, and reindeer. There was even a unicorn and an eagle! Christine Thomas would like to offer special thanks to the University Police Department for offering extra raffle tickets to students donating bears at COPS Open Rec Night and to the second shift custodians who donated bears in lieu of exchanging gifts at their holiday party.

Political Science Students Inducted into Honor Society |
Six students were inducted into the Alpha Beta Gamma chapter of the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society on Nov. 30. The induction ceremony, held in the Connecticut Room of Gelsi-Young Hall, featured a keynote address by State Rep. Denise Merrill of the 54th District. Merrill described the November 2006 election as a “great example of where one issue, Iraq, had a galvanizing influence. It struck the nation’s nerve.” She encouraged students considering public life to think of where they could have the greatest impact, and warned them that politics can be tough on one’s personal life and privacy.
Adam Brzozowski, Rosanne Carlo, Jennifer Doughty, Nicole Oppelt, Daniel Routhier, and Elisa Wilson were inducted based on their academic performance, character, and intellectual interest in making the world a better place. Eastern’s Alpha Beta Gamma chapter is three years old, joining a national organization established in 1920; Pi Sigma Alpha inducts 7,000 students nationally each year. |
